I'm Chad Carey. Mostly at Little Death, sometimes at

Good morning San Antonio! Just a reminder that the man who owns The Pearl (that pretty place you love to have dinner & take selfies & walk your dog) was one of the major funders of the January 6 storming of the Capitol. Enjoy your time at the Farmer’s Market this weekend!
Our team has opened up a new place downtown & I hope you all like it.
Double Standard
114 East Houston
Noon-Midnight, Mon - Sat
Happy Hour everyday, open-6pm
$1 oysters $2 beers $3 wells
lots of Bob Seger on the playlist
Cool story oh also by the way the man who owns The Pearl donated $1,000,000 to the group that organized the Jan. 6 protests. He was by far the largest donor.
It was about to rain, so Lakey Hinson figured it was time to wrap up his lively floral chalk design on the sidewalk beside a busy Bandera Road.
But then the Leon Valley police rolled up. What followed — captured on body-camera video last month — ultimately led to apologies from…
The Amp Room has decided to host a protest event for the AOC thing at Paper Tiger so now it’s time to start making unrelenting fun of those losers on the regular. Yes, this includes their incarnation of Earl Abel’s.
We’ve started doing NOLA style poboys each & every Saturday at Double Standard oh and by the way this happens in conjunction with all day happy hour so if you were so inclined you could get a dozen oysters & a shrimp poboy & 5 beers for $34 which isn’t a typo
So everyone knows - I offered to let the District 1 office use Paper Tiger several days ago. Because they knew they couldn’t use the large room at St. Sophia’s. They didn’t respond. Now we are sweating in a parking lot.
Good morning everyone! What a fun debate last night!
BTW, the man who owns The Pearl was Trump’s largest financial supporter in SA in 2019 & he wrote a $200k check to his PAC (another $100k to the RNC) in March of this year (via his wife).
As part of our never-ending quest to do things that most people are too smart to do, Double Standard is now open on Fridays & Saturdays with our *full menu* until 2am, which means you can get get oysters/wedge salads/steak frites/burgers/cocktails while most people are snoring.
Come to Paper Tiger tonight!
(also like the other politicians we host this is extraordinarily intentional because we think Abbott is a pathetic governor & and even-worse human being & we aren’t cowards about saying so)
Imagine being a billionaire who opened a $20 million Tex Mex restaurant and having to do a sponsored IG post to convince people to come eat enchiladas for lunch in San Antonio Texas, what a loser LOL.
Let’s all rally hard for our daytime food friends trying to survive in the N. St. Mary’s Warzone. Today would be the perfect time to spend some $ at Curry Boyz, Singh’s, Attaboy/Attagirl, Tycoon Flats, El Milagrito, or Demo’s!!!
GATHER ROUND FRIENDS! On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, I would once again like to call attention to the gross behavior of The Pearl’s owner, Kit Goldsbury. 1/11
The Barbaro team wanted to do a lasagna and I said “okay but it’s gotta be cool & not suck” and so Philpot made a bazillion layer lasagna that we cut into slices, sear off in the oven & cover with parm reg. It’s a giant slab & it’s really good & we only serve it on Wednesdays.
Fun fact: you’re riding on an alternate parade route because the city departments that YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR can’t finish construction projects on time.
Do you know how many “beautiful faces” have suffered meaningful economic losses because of your limp leadership?
No better way to start the day than by seeing the beautiful faces of San Antonio bright and early at the annual Battle of Flowers parade.
!VIVA Fiesta! 🪅
Hey
@Ron_Nirenberg
- DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. There’s no one from Spaw Glass working. Your impotence is hurting people & businesses. DO SOMETHING!!!
Quality has severely diminished at
@BillMillerBarBQ
. Ordered two bean and cheese tacos with salsa. I received two bean tacos with bbq sauce. No cheese and no salsa. WTF!
#fail
This makes me want to host this event (and our friends from The Starlighter) at Paper Tiger. We can’t let these fundamentalist maniacs continue to act like this.
A reminder as temps climb: Little Death, Barbaro, and Double Standard will all have our AC temps set to absolutely freeze your ass this summer. Bring a sweater if you don’t like it because I won’t be swayed by your complaints.
I wanna try something different at the Little Death airstream.
Once/week recurring residency (i.e. every Thursday) for people who wanna do a cool food thing. No rent, no utilities, you keep all the $. I might even loan $. Just gotta pitch me on your idea.
DM’s open.
The businesses on The Strip are getting crushed. After surviving 2020, this
@COSAGOV
project is literally killing us.
If you could - take a few minutes to let
@Ron_Nirenberg
know that we need help.
Tweeting through the construction apocalypse in full vulnerable transparency- Even during Covid and small capacity reopening (25%) I never saw days like I did yesterday where the bars’ total revenue was $67 (not a typo
@TheMontereySA
). 1/2
I just wanna get back to doing steak lunches at Double Standard & booking hardcore bands at Paper Tiger & ranting about Beaujolais at Little Death & being freaky at Hands Down & hosting fun parties & serving good food & drink to all my San Antonio friends.
Via mgmt @ Hot Joy:
“I had a man come up demanding your contact info b/c the music is awful & they will never be returning. I told them that we’re known for being not the ‘typical’ place & he was pretty upset by that. So you may get an email from a man (still eating here btw)”
Just in case anyone was wondering if the management of the construction has improved…here’s your answer.
(We are open tonight by the way)
I’d rant about who’s responsible for this but it doesn’t matter anymore.
I wanna build more places in the city I love.
I need good humans who want to be FoH & Kitchen managers to join the Empty Stomach gang. Full medical & other benefits, 3 weeks paid vacation, bonus on top of salary.
DMs open.
Watching 1,000 kids sing along to a band they love with their friends is so damn cool, and I love that we get to host this, despite all the recent shit, because I used to be one of those kids, and this is important.
We collectively posted this (and meant it!) back when the “parking study” was announced. The good faith that we’ve shown has not been reciprocated. There is an active effort to radically alter The Strip. And it’s time to change our approach.
I think if I didn’t like bars, I wouldn’t move to a neighborhood that’s been home to bars FOR OVER FORTY YEARS.
(And for the record yes I’d live on these streets, I actually own a bar that’s on the street where I live and I’d open another one if I could, bars are awesome)
@TheMontereySA
Do you have 20 bars jam up against your house? Would you live on any of those adjacent streets? Zoning exists for a clear reason. ZIMBY is your new name.
Anyways…if you can, pick up some Curry Boyz for lunch. Help our dudes out. Please feel free to use the Little Death or Midnight Swim lots to park and also feel free to chill in one of the 28 air conditioned stools at LD.
Texas is open 100%.
Texans should have the freedom to go where they want without any limits, restrictions, or requirements.
Today, I signed a law that prohibits any TX business or gov’t entity from requiring vaccine passports or any vaccine information.
This is
@AnisaSchellTX
- lives in Tobin Hill and works for Bravo. Her husband is active in the TH neighborhood association. And she used to be active too, before she went to work for Bravo. She has been actively working against us.
The face you make when you’re secretly trying to gentrify/ privatize the St. Mary’s Strip on behalf of your little Tier 1 Neighborhood bullshit, but the community who has existed for decades isn’t letting you.
Thanks to
@MarioBravo
&
@Ron_Nirenberg
for this next step. We’ve been hard on them publicly but I’ll be the first guy to credit them if they can provide relief for our employees & businesses.
City construction projects have hurt local businesses. You asked for help. We advocated. We pushed. $2.25M is now on the agenda for consideration next week. Thank you
@Ron_Nirenberg
for helping. Let's get relief to those who need it now to ensure our local businesses survive.
I would like a bright industrious young person to do a “Top 10 Most-Terrifying Places in SA that Will 100% Allow All Customers to Be Maskless Next Week”.
The Hot Joy crew asked me to stfu about the new menu until they had a a weeks worth of practice but now I can say “THE NEW MENU RULES COME CHECK IT OUT”
Things are coming to a head in SA.
Pearl’s “fake downtown w/ ugly totalitarianism“ vs. independent restaurants run by independent people.
The Conservation Society vs. artists creating vibrant public spaces.
Newly-arrived NIMBYs vs. normal humans who love live music & nightlife
My twitter is normally reserved for sneering debauchery & self-righteous boorishness...
But I cannot overstate how proud I am of the Barbaro & Hot Joy crews for making dinner for hundreds of grateful people tonight.
Hey everyone!
With the help of a wonderfully weird team, I opened a wine bar today.
It’s called Little Death. There’s an IG where there will be more info about it. 2327 N. St. Mary’s.
Come by and have a glass and some pate en croute!
Everyone please remember to go vote tomorrow. This is the sort of election where turnout will be abysmal…which means small-but-fanatical groups of people can have a outsized impact on the rest of us (sorta like, you know, certain neighborhood associations).
Proud of the Barbaro & Hot Joy crews for pulling together and reopening. We are gonna be take-out only for a long time, and these menus reflect our efforts to offer food that will travel and hold well.
AND GOOD LORD THE FROZEN COCKTAIL OPTIONS!
5pm - 10pm, 7 days/week.
Starting tonight and continuing every Monday, Hands Down is doing a very cool thing where they’re serving Indian food that Alex & John from Hot Joy make, and what makes it very cool is that it’s free when you buy a drink (even a non-alcohol drink)!
Sorry for the crappy pic but Extra Fine has started putting grab/go sandwiches in the case that are light years better than other grab/go sandwich options, including ham & butter on baguette so you can act like a true French person.
The 15 minute city is cool, but today I will be enjoying a 10 minute city where I can enjoy 2 James Beard nominated restaurants, watch Black Flag play “My War”, drink natural wine, dance (badly), eat tacos at 3am, & walk home.
Right here in San Anto Texas.
To the gentlemen with the British accent on The Source: my dude, there’s *nothing* stopping you from opening a bakery on The Strip! I’ll even help you get it started!
I struggled to think of a smart way to memorialize Il Sogno.
I just keep thinking about what SA restaurants were like before it opened.
If you love food & live in SA, you owe
@AKWeissman
for totally resetting the standard.
Please consider this your official invite to come out tomorrow at 10am (St. Sophia’s) and tell
@MarioBravo
to reject the privatization of our public streets.
A friendly reminder that the inside of Little Death is set at 65f so I’m gonna get some A+ barbecue & come hide in my little cave & you’re all cordially invited to join.
This summer is the summer we need to make the long-overdue decision to adjust our lifestyle to the Spanish way.
Giant lunch at noon. Everyone breaks from work from 2pm-5pm. Restaurants don’t open until 9pm.
WHO’S WITH ME???
This Sunday, come meet Dr. Kaur & see why we think she’s the candidate who can help all your favorite places on The Strip recover. Free food from the Fajita Lounge crew, free beer from Paper Tiger, free jams from Big Tex Johnny.
We had a code enforcement officer come and write two citations at our businesses today 🥰
I will contest both in court &
@COSAGOV
won’t win, but you get the point.
“I wonder who asked code enforcement to come by???”
1. CFS is literally low-quality cuts of beef, you wouldn’t pound/bread/fry a “perfect steak”
2. No one serves “whipped potatoes” with CFS in Texas, they’re called “mashed potatoes”
3. Putting brown gravy on a CFS is idiotic & wrong
Other than that, you guys crushed this post
Looking for the best Chicken Fried Steak in San Antonio?
At The Esquire Tavern, we offer the perfect 7oz steak, served atop whipped potatoes with house-made country gravy.
