17 years ago today (9/2/08) was the release of ‘Infinite Undiscovery’ on the Xbox 360 in North America. This action RPG follows the character Capell as he joins forces with the Liberation Force to remove the chains holding the moon. It also has real-time narrative choices.

‘Mad Max’ released on the Xbox One, PS4 & PC 10 years ago today (9/1/15). This 3rd-person, open-world game was developed by Avalanche Studios & published by Warner Brothers Interactive. It emphasized vehicular combat & uses a similar fighting system to the Arkham games.

Mark your calendars! Sony just announced a “State of Play” dedicated solely to ‘007 First Light’. The showcase will stream live on Wednesday at 1:00 PM CST for 30 minutes & will show gameplay footage, including Bond’s entire first mission.

Today is the 10th anniversary (9/1/15) of ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ on Xbox 360/One, PS3/4 & PC. The 9th game in the Metal Gear franchise was Kojima’s last game at Konami. It shipped 6 million units by the end of the year & was very well-received.

On this day, 21 years ago (8/30/04), ‘Pikmin 2’ released on the GameCube in North America. This was the sequel to original game from 2001 on the same platform. It appeared on Wii in 2012, had an HD remaster on the Switch in 2023 & spawned 2 sequels in 2013 and 2023 respectively.

‘Valkyrie Profile’ released in North America on the original PlayStation this day 25 years ago (8/29/00). This Norse mythology-inspired JRPG had a deep & complicated combat system & has since been ported to PSP & even mobile. It sold over 700,000 copies worldwide.

25 years ago today (8/28/25), ‘Mario Tennis’ released on the N64 in the United States. This sports crossover was the first direct installment of the series. It also introduced us to the character Waluigi & is responsible for bringing back Daisy & Birdo into the Nintendo roster.

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the NA release of ‘Metroid Prime 3: Corruption’ (8/27/07). The 7th main game in the series was developed by Retro Studios & featured a new control scheme using the Wii Remote/Nunchuck. It was also included in ‘Metroid Prime: Trilogy’.

23 years ago today (8/26/25), ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ released on the GameCube in N. America. The 3D follow-up to ‘Super Mario 64’ is very divisive in terms of reception. It incorporated a new mechanic tasking players with cleaning Delphino Island using a device called F.L.U.D.D.

‘Goldeneye’ released on the N64 on August 25, 1997 (28 years ago today). Based on the film by the same name, it’s one of the rare exceptions of a game that aligns nearly perfectly to its source material. It also included incredible 4-person MP & is an iconic game on the platform.
