This is no easy feat! It requires knowledge of the overall ‘shape’ of the text, identification of the Christological significance to the Story of Salvation, and ‘telescoping’ that interaction to the present hearer. More than that, it also acknowledges the occasion.

Gifted homileticians “do the text” to their hearers. This is a wonderful example of what this can look like in practice. Note the hearers’ realtime responses to the rhetorical movement toward Jesus. It mirrors the movement of the text itself, while applying it to the present.
The entire sermon from @MattCHarrison at this year’s #LCMSYG is worth listening to…but this opening line has resonated with me ever since. The sermon text was Daniel 3 for context.

This isn’t meant to be a taunt, for what it’s worth. I think there’s a real desire for Christian unity from the Vatican, and it’s not coming just from squishy Libs anymore. I think a robust ecumenism is emerging, from the same line as Benedict’s Ordinariate.

I have a Lutheran/Newtheran friend looking Eastward. They find the worship aesthetic and semi-Pelagianism appealing. I fear they will lose confidence in their baptism and, ultimately, hope. Anyone have good resources?.
