How to read everything? Still pinching myself that my @NewDirections book about a bellicose grammarian is on this @nationalbook list. As Tom Hulce's spellbound Wolfie says, when sampling hair-metal wigs in Amadeus: 'They’re all so beautiful. Why don’t I have 3 heads?' Or 30.
Congratulations to Fernando Vallejo & Yvette Siegert, Anne Carson, Elizabeth Willis, and Solvej Balle & Barbara Haveland, longlisted for the 2024 National Book Awards for Poetry and Translated Literature!

Brava!!! Yvette Siegert long listed for the National Book Award for her translation of Fernando Vallejo’s The Abyss.
I’ve been offline and therefore utterly stunned to be on this longlist for the National Book Award, for my translation of Fernando Vallejo’s masterpiece, THE ABYSS, a project ten years in the works that has woven through a complex trajectory of my life. Grateful.

Prize lists are always incomplete, and the longlist for this year’s National Book Award is very much not an exception to that rule. Lots of books I love didn’t make it, but I hope readers will be able to connect with some of the great ones that did.

Even when I disagreed with her interpretation of a poem, that reading still seemed so infallible, indelible, beautiful. Coming of Age As a Poet changed my life. How much she taught us, and did for us. My heart aches, and we’ll always miss her. 💔📚

RIP, dear Helen Vendler. I’ll never forget her sitting me down and plotting a way for me to go study with her. Or the delight of hearing her rooster-watch crow — say, in the midst of her reading Stevens. Then a giggle, as if the rooster had been conjured by the words themselves.

As my employer - @Columbia University - calls armed riot police into campus to smash a peaceful protest against a genocide, we must all speak out. My former students have been arrested. I'm proud of you. History will be too. Remember what I said in our first class last year:
