5/ Overall, we still find that 65% of Californians support SB1047 when presented with arguments for and against the bill. Support is particularly strong amongst Democrats with 72% supporting and 20% opposed.

4/ Interestingly, 54% of respondents who self-report working in tech think the Frontier Model Division should be kept in the bill, comparable with 56% with the same opinion statewide.

3/ Another amendment narrows whistleblower protections to exclusively apply to employees of the company violating the company’s SSP. Californians reject this amendment as well with 69% saying that whistleblower protections should cover any concerns and also apply to contractors.

2/ One amendment to SB1047 allows AI model developers to redact elements of their Safety and Security Protocols (SSPs) required by the bill. We find 51% of Californians oppose such redactions while 25% support.

1/ AIPI released a new poll of California this week looking at amendments proposed to the state’s SB1047 regulating frontier AI development. We find that Californians support safety testing requirements and prefer keeping the Frontier Model Division to oversee AI development.

3/ Democrats in California think SB1047 should become law, with 66% saying that Governor Newsom should sign SB1047 if it comes to his desk, compared with 7% opposed and 27% that marked not sure.

2/ Respondents working in the tech industry were particularly supportive of creating a Frontier Model Division to oversee compliance, with 71% supportive and 8% opposed. Democrats also support this element with 68% in favor of the bill and 4% opposed.
