From the looks of this picture, I thought the rifle was holding its own press conference and telling everyone how it didn't kill those people, someone else did.

I'm counting down the hours to 4:20 PT on Friday. Then I'll seal my account in the arctic ice of the internet. Only there to be dug up for a cringe joke or a misinterpreted comment. A contemporaneous artifact for prospects long forgotten.

But I fear that the sunset is upon us. I don't see any of that coming to fruition. More likely it will just triple down as the oxycontin of media. Poison for our brains. It will finally take its place as the rings in which the circus performs.

Imagine @Twitter as the scaffolding for payment processing in health care? Or scheduling? Or patient driven pathology? Just scratching the surface, really.

There's lots of potential still for creating the world's most trusted news and information service. Loads of potential for web3 content and service sharing. Even health care could be a thing!

@elonmusk will have to do lots of things in order to bail himself out of the world's most expensive game of Fuck Around and Find Out. Editable tweets? bout time. Encrypted DMs? Please. Financial transactions? Yes. Super app? Sure. Letting the Misleader in Chief back aboard? Nyet.

Others have done more extraordinary things. @Twitter is basically the most blockchain like data repository that isn't a blockchain. So it could still have promise. Tons, really.

Oh people have tried. I recall @jaminguy working on making it the backbone of app to app interoperability more than a decade ago. I used it to communicate to my phone whether my garage door was open or closed back in 09. It was easy and free.

Mind you, all of that is fixable and isn't necessary. But making Twitter into something of our better angels isn't very lucrative.

Forget content moderation or sussing out bots. Twitter's corporate culture seemed awful. Worse than just being lazy, Twitter wasn't just unambitious, but barely content to just exist. The Fail Whale seems to be the real mascot

I often described it as what god must feel like, having access to everyone's consciousness and thoughts constantly, no matter how trivial or grotesque. Now I know why god hates humanity.

Twitter became and still is the poster child for what's wrong with social media. Endless flame wars. Cesspools of misinformation. The profiteering of rage. The armory for keyboard warriors the world over.

Now, it's not so new, and I would say it's still different, but not necessarily in the best ways.

Like a teenager, the future seemed bright and prosperous for a new world. Anything was possible. We saw the news gatekeepers wither, the Arab Spring, the guy who first tweeted about the helicopters taking out Bin Laden. It was amazing.

I joined @Twitter at a @barcampnash in August, 2007. Back then, it was not obvious what this service was or could be, only that it was new and different. Note to self: grab as short of a handle as possible for anything.
