On Lovecraft’s 135th birthday, it’s essential to remind ourselves that we can love* and appreciate Lovecraft’s works not for the sake of “lore” (whatever this means now), not because of his growing circle of talented contemporaries and friends 1/1.

Woke up this morning; it’s drizzling, and the weather is a bit dull, which I adore: a nice break from the heatwave. It’s been 13 years since I arrived in this country: things that were so alien then feel so familiar now. Love you, my Stepmotherland And thank you for everything.

Jesus wept! How dreadful 😞 I visited a lovely antique bookshop somewhere in the centre of Amsterdam earlier this summer, and it was a marvel.

Tragedy - and an ominous sign of these barbaric times. An Amsterdam antiquarian bookshop whose owner died years ago and whom I visited as a teen, was evicted a few days ago. The books went to the trash heap, in a garbage container outside the premises. Report from @volksvlijt

without inserting too much prima facie in them.** in addition to his foul ideological beliefs, which started shifting at the end of his short life, but, sadly, never got a compelling reshuffle.***Which is ironic, given the fact that he was an atheist 1/8.

__________.*If you are not afraid of the strong old words depicting your emotional state as a reader and even as a researcher: mind you, the least could be potentially punishable; as scholars, we are supposed to be sharply objective in our literary ramblings 1/7.

havoc. The utter brilliance of Lovecraft is his almost religious and relentless commitment*** to curb our fear to be fearful, and he did it flawlessly. Happy heavenly (or not) birthday to him. 1/6.

What is even more bizarre and fantastic is that he uses pretty much the same lingo all over again (which quickly became an object for endless mockery), while transgressing from mundane normality to the monstrous—and yes indeed, it’s fair to say, unimaginable and unnameable, 1/5.

His comprehensive ability to depict the macabre, however drily at first, giving the reader a distorted impression of somewhat tedious narration that often is a sign of “safe” old-fashioned prose, just in time to plunge into hypno-suggestive elusiveness next. 1/4.

he wasn’t the first who used Cosmicism as an active force in his art either. And, of course, he certainly was not the first whose legacy was tainted by the “paraliterature/pulp-fiction” label**. So, what is it about him then that makes him so special? 1/3.

(or, at least, this could not be the main reason), but because of himself as an author. Lovecraft wasn’t the first writer who combined in his storytelling the elements of horror, fantasy and sci fi (which was actively developing at the time); 1/2.
