Why do neurotypical people think we should be aiming for autistic people to be "coping" in school? Coping is not a comfortable state to be in for 6 hours a day 5 days a week! No wonder autistic people burn out! #SEND #autism #NotFineInSchool #ExcludedByNotBeingIncluded

The right support opens up the world for people like Bethany. Staff who really understand the person they support and who do their utmost to fulfil dreams. Community Integrated Care have helped Beth fulfil a lifetime dream today.. A trip to Comic Con. They are awesome!!

Incredible disclosure today An internal email from @StaffordshireCC saying that Head of #sen has directed the Team must defend all dyslexia appeals Email continues that "unfortunately" the LA has to prepare a "strong case" so much to unpick #ehcp

The single biggest problem in education today is the lack of an education system that caters for (or even pretends to care about) ALL children @bphillipsonMP @GillianKeegan @educationgov @NotFineinSchool #NotFineInSchool
The single biggest problem in education today: children aren’t at school. Labour has a plan to get our children into school and learning again. Excellence must be for everyone.

In mediation (DARS) with the school principal she described this as messy play. She said Harry has sensory needs & he needed to experience ‘messy play’. This is forced compliance, it wasn’t a choice, he was also mechanically restrained to force participation #HarrysLaw
Why does we consistently ignore the difference between making a child do something, and them choosing to do that same thing? We talk of ‘deliberate practice’ when we mean ‘deliberately making them practice’. 1/

I've got a teeny weeny bit of news... Since Beth was first locked away I've logged some figures. To visit her in various settings I have driven...73,850 miles. That took 1,877 hours. If you broke that into 8 hr days thats 234 days or 33.5 weeks.

'Keegan said the SEND tribunal factor was “basically…lots of parents taking councils to tribunal to get to a particular school, normally an independent school, normally very expensive independent schools”. Ms Keegan, get in the sea!

Minister also says parents use 'tribunal factor' to get kids into 'expensive independent schools'

Once again: The SEND Tribunal applies the law. The law says children & young people have the right to special educational provision that meets their needs. If their needs can't be met at the nearest school, the Tribunal will rule that they should attend a school that can.
SEND system is 'lose, lose, lose', costing a 'fortune' and not providing the 'right service', admits Keegan She also told @SCHOOLSNE conference parents were using the system of tribunals to get their children into 'very expensive independent schools' https://t.co/BDT46N3vzP

Some big claims here. Let's take a look at them

One problem: it's hard to credibly use a document to combat misinformation when that document comes pre-loaded with the LA's own disinformation. Here's page 23 of THRIVE, which misleadingly describes the threshold & requirements for EHC needs assessment

Omg!!!!!! 😳😳😳 This is a perfect example of education not understanding #Autism Everyone states they’re gonna learn…… my question is WHEN?!!!! If they’re in charge of our kids, they should already know! ⬇️⬇️⬇️🤬🤬🤬🤬

I interviewed autistic teenagers about their special interests for my dissertation. This is what they had to say about school environments. Next to the💚are ideas that offer support, so that everyone is included @autisticrealms @NDConnectionUK @educationgovuk @Ofstednews

“NHS reveals when to send sick kids to school as minister slams 'cautious' parents” Here we go. We’re either irresponsible or over cautious. 🙄 There is nothing wrong with taking a day to rest when feeling unwell. Self-managed healthcare is a good thing.
apple.news
NHS guidance states kids should be sent to school with coughs, colds and Covid – as Education Minister Nick Gibb brands parents “too cautious”.

The biggest risk to a successful Secondary transition for SEND is lack of coproduced planning with a parent and a 'we'll see how they are for ourselves and meet with you if we have any concerns' attitude. Don't expect parent help in Year 9 when the transition failure hits.

We shouldn't need to add 'access to a toilet at all times' to our Schools Reasonable Adjustments document. But it seems we do. Locked bathrooms other than for very short windows of times are anxiety-inducing for neurodivergent pupils. A 'toilet pass' does NOT require a GP letter.

Just had an email from a devastated mummy. Her 6 year old excluded from his school end of year show because "he might spoil it for the other children" This wee boy is autistic and has been learning his songs for weeks now! He doesn't understand why he is not included. 😭😭

Secondary mainstream academy told about prospective pupil with major auditory sensory sensitivity: "We'll soon get those ear defenders off him, we don't allow them in school". And they wonder why so many children with SEN struggle in the mainstream.

This is a banner which was hung in at least three schools in York by the South Bank Trust, a MAT. It is harmful to young people and their families, and it is dishonest. This is why. 1/

A little thread about my own school experiences.. I was a grade A, top set student but there was lots of subjects I didn’t like Maths, Science, languages, PE. In fact I hated them. They seemed incredibly dull and pointless to me, did not interest me at all..1/
