Write afraid. Write terrified. Write unknowing and gangly as a colt. Write confused and lost confounded. Learn that way, reading for aspiration’s sake. Get to the end and know you’ve grown and you’ve done it without stealing a single thing. It will feel better like triumph.

But the point of art, engaging and grappling and learning and hating and loving and fighting for every single clause, is its difficulty. Its difficulty is its humanity. You will never produce great works by stealing our work. You will regurgitate, make beige and bland, normalize.

My debut comes out in six months. I will spend this time terrified instead of overjoyed. I will worry that the craft I spent years honing for words to make a difference will be scraped into massive, world-injurious machines. I will hear arguments that AI makes art accessible.

I applied to courses, free and paid, and developed my craft. I engaged in thoughtful discussion of books and themes with friends and colleagues. I applied and attended an MFA program. I read for online journals and worked as editorial staff. I did this to become scared of AI.

It’s taken a long time for me to settle on what to say about the LibGen database and theft of books for AI. But I think I’m there now. I spent decades of my life unready to begin. I spent late nights, hunched over sleeping infants, squinting to read in low light.
