My race bike had 5 gears. Btwn 1st & 2nd is the NEUTRAL .During a race engaging in NEUTRAL means bike stalls & stops ,you give way to be overtaken until back in gear .NEUTRAL gear in the middle of a race is a hazard to yourself & other riders too!!
