This Day in T&F—July 23.Happy Birthday (51) to Maurice Greene, the 2000 Olympic champion in the 100 and 4x100 relay, and a 3-time World Champion in the 100 (’97, ’99, ’01)…also won the 200 and 4x100 in ’99. Former World Record holder in the 100-9.79. OG:

This Day in T&F—July 23.2000--A big day for the Clark family at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento. Hazel won the Women’s 800 in 1:58.97 and was joined on the U.S. team by sister-in-law Jearl Miles (1:59.12) and older sister Joetta (1:59.49). 1/2.

This Day in T&F—July 22.2022--Sydney McLaughlin won the 400m-hurdles at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, running 50.68 to set her 4th World Record in the event. She would lower the record twice more in 2024—50.65, 50.37.

This Day in T&F—July 22.2005—Competing at the London Super Grand Prix, Russia’s Yelena Isinbaeva became the first woman to clear 5-meters (16-4 ¾) in the Pole Vault. It was her 2nd World Record of the day, having earlier cleared 16-3 ¼ (4.96).

This Day in T&F—May 27.2001-Alan Webb ran 3:53.43 in the Bowerman Mile at the Pre Classic in Eugene to break Jim Ryun’s 36-year old U.S. High School Record of 3:55.3h! Bringing Webb along on his victory lap was race winner Hicham El Guerrouj (3:49.92).

This Day in T&F—May 17.2019—Kenny Bednarek (Indian Hills C.C.), won the 200m at the Junior College Championships in 19.82 after running a very wind-aided (+6.1) 19.49 in his heat the day before. “Kung Fu” Kenny has since won silver medals in the 200 at the 2021 and 2024 Olympics.
