I completely believe it. When young parents ask me for early homeschooling advice, I tell them to start curating a good home library (used are great!) and keep it in the public spaces in the home. Then designate mandatory DEAR (drop everything and read) time once a day, where.

'My commonplace book is a healthy mix of St. John Henry Newman and Michael Scott'. Entirely agree with @tsh except for me it's probably a mix of Dorothy Sayers and Leslie Knope 🤣

Current view above my writing desk, where my current contracted book manuscript that’s part memoir, part theological treatise, is failing to write itself. Alas.

I chatted with @HarrisonGarlic1 on @TheGreatB00ks about Aristophanes’ comedy The Frogs — and the episode is now out! It was a really fun chat (about something I don’t talk about much online — Greek plays.).

@TheGreatB00ks @tsh Tsh was great. The Frogs is hilarious and speaks to a civilization in decline. Worth the read.

Briefly pausing my summer break here because I’m getting lots of messages asking whether our family is safe from the Central Texas floods. Thanks be to God, we are safe. We live two blocks from the San Gabriel River, and after 15 inches of solid rain the evening of July 4, it

Earlier this month I led a group of 70 (70!) of us down the Rhine River as we witnessed Cologne Cathedral, medieval towns like Speyer, Strasbourg, and Colmar, the Black Forest region, the Alps, and more. There’s no way to fully summarize the beauty of our time together, but.

Shameless plug -- but if you want a clear analysis of what Pope Leo XIII wrote on what makes for a strong and just society, check it out. I don't just do Rerum novarum. Leo was ALWAYS writing about social issues. I look closely at 30+ of his letters:.

I like this idea. Consider that for much of human history, the faithful barely knew who the pope even *was.* We don’t need to know his daily thoughts; we need him to lead us.

NEW: Vatican sources say Pope Leo is considering shutting down or, at least, pausing the @pontifex social media accounts. A decision will be made this week. If Leo’s silence on Twitter is one form of resistance, his early words on technology are another. In one of his first.
