I rated Gladiator (2000) 9/10 #IMDb “Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife.” Epic and looks great in 4K. The star of the show is Hans Zimmer’s score.

I rated Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (2023) 8/10 #IMDb ‘The most controversial film ever made’ is shocking, disgusting and depraved and I don’t recommend it to anyone. This new version is great though. McDowell and O’Toole are both excellent and revolting

I rated Blitz (2024) 6/10 #IMDb Maybe there’s a reason why so few films focus solely on the Blitz. Steve McQueen’s effort looks good but has little story or feeling. It goes a bit Oliver Twist when Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke turn up

I rated Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) 8/10 #IMDb Re-assessment. I really enjoyed this the 2nd time round - it tries something different and new unlike the previous entry. Visually stunning and I enjoyed the comedic elements.

I rated Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) 6/10 #IMDb Re-assessment. It looks excellent but there’s just too much fan service - The plot jumbles together lots of best bits from the original trilogy. Daisy Ridley is naff

I rated The End We Start From (2023) 5/10 #IMDb Jodie Comer must look after her newborn child after London is submerged and England descends into chaos. In the style of so many of these movies, there’s too little money to give it any sense of scale.

I rated Somewhere in Time (1980) 8/10 #IMDb There’s no wonder why this Richard Matheson-penned romantic time travel movie feels like an extended Twilight Zone episode. Christopher Reeve is extremely charming.

I rated Stargate (1994) 8/10 #IMDb Very enjoyable sci-fi from Roland Emmerich that paved the way for Independence Day. Mid-90s use of practical effects are so refreshing. Kurt Russell is bad-ass

I rated You Can't Take It with You (1938) 7/10 #IMDb Jean Arthur & James Stewart star in this happy Capra movie. The real stars are Lionel Barrymore and Edward Arnold as duelling patriarchs. Half an hour too long.

I rated The Years Between (1946) 6/10 #IMDb Valerie Hobson believes her MP husband Michael Redgrave died in the war, so takes up his place in parliament and re-marries. Well-acted but isn’t brave enough to fully push its message.
