A5: Finding ways to, even briefly, catch your breath & moments of peace. Finding (new) ways to cultivate hope, meaning & purpose in life, despite pain. Findings ways to see yourself as being valued, accepted & loved, despite the suffering you experience #noteasy #CanadianPainlive.

A4: Building trust, communicating empathy, showing compassion = a vital foundation. Also, open questions to explore how pain has disrupted their life, while recognizing signs that pain + suffering might be presently overwhelming their capacity to talk about this #CanadianPainlive.

Q3: I’m not a fan. While we should support personal agency over suffering, it's not helpful to think that people who are suffering would somehow choose this for themselves or that they could simply "opt out" of their suffering. #CanadianPainLIVE #CanadianPain23.

A2: 2/2 Yes, but the qualities of the pain experienced, don’t dictate the potential for suffering. Intense pain while delivering a baby or running a marathon may be important sources of suffering for some, but not others. Suffering = subjective. #CanadianPainLIVE #CanadianPain23.

A2: Yes, definitely! When I stub my toe, swear, and then shake it off, pain doesn’t really have a chance to get inside “who I am”. For me, I don't think of these more fleeting, trivial pains as meeting my personal threshold for suffering. 1/2 #CanadianPainLIVE #CanadianPain23.

A1: Suffering happens when pain disrupts fundamental aspects of who you are and how you normally navigate the world – When pain means that you can't recognize yourself or when it overwhelms your ability think, feel and move, this is suffering. #CanadianPainLIVE #CanadianPain23.

Such a great point for healthcare providers as well! .So easy for us to jump too quickly into problem solving mode, when the patient often first wants to just feel heard and understood.

When people share their problems, they're not always looking for solutions. They're often seeking support. Sharing bad news may not make them feel better, but it does bring you closer. The most basic form of compassion is not alleviating distress. It's acknowledging distress.
