@_karmacap @juliannalorenzo @andrespsyc @VWongsomboon My quant background is proven to be useful for the team (e.g., measurement, analysis). At the same time, I’m gaining more exposure to focus groups and interviews. I’m also learning management skills from our project coordinator, Andres @andrespsyc.

I have lots of freedom to do research that I’m passionate about and opportunities to learn new skills. I’m trying to become an independent researcher, but at the same time I know I still have a lot to learn.

@_karmacap When not working on projects, I am usually writing manuscripts with the wonderful team in this thread ( @juliannalorenzo; @andrespsyc; @VWongsomboon) on important topics like PrEP use and safety when using dating apps.

My role here @THRIVECenterNU is to assist ongoing projects with @_karmacap by leveraging my background in qualitative research, while also learning to apply implementation science methodology.

Hi all, my name is Jacob, and I am a (newer) postdoc at @THRIVECenterNU. My background is in social work, where I focused on understanding the well-being of LGBTQ+ folks and their dating application usage.

3.) Finding your meaning in research takes a lot of time and experience. You don’t have to know exactly what questions or interests fuel you as a researcher, especially because they will continuously evolve. 12/13.

2.) Find a team that values and respects you for the person you are and not just the work you can put out. 11/13.

1.) Research is built on collaboration, so people want to connect you to the researchers who share your passions. Ask your professors about their work and other research labs they know about in their department. 10/13.

All that to say – research is a weird and finicky field but is also an amazing space where you are surrounded by collaborators who get to explore the things that mean the most to them. 8/?.

Long story short, I ended up joining @THRIVECenterNU in July and am now living in Chicago! It’s been so fun to explore a completely new city and work my way through our lab’s master list of the best Asian food in town (thank you @VWongsomboon and @denhli) 7/?.

I wasn’t following her, but the Twitter algorithm put it on my feed, and in a mental state fueled by a lot of cold brew and the looming dread of post-college life, I decided to apply. 6/?.

When I was getting ready to graduate from undergrad, I had no clue what I wanted to do – I wasn't even job hunting for research opportunities, and even planned to move back home to Seattle and work odd jobs while figuring it out. 4/?.
