Our food system is making us sick, but, according to @FAO, encouraging dietary shifts through different policy levers has the potential to address health AND environmental hidden costs.

This year’s report used TCA to find: ❤️‍🩹70% of all hidden costs in the agrifood systems are due to diet-related diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. 🌱Environmental hidden costs are highest ($720 billion) in countries that are transitioning to industrial agriculture.

Today is Food, Agriculture and Water day at #COP29Baku. @FAO’s #SOFA2024 report revealed that our agrifood system costs us almost $12 trillion each year.

It is clear: Transformation of agrifood systems goes beyond increasing production. Value-driven transformation considers positive and negative impacts, prioritizing health, sustainability and equity.

🌏 Countries are already embracing TCA for national policymaking to identify solutions best suited to their local context.

💰Industrial and diversifying agrifood systems have the highest hidden costs at $5.9 trillion) - which are dominated by health hidden costs. 🥘Dietary shifts will address high hidden health costs.

Findings: 🍽️Unhealthy diets related to non-communicable diseases account for 70% of all hidden costs. ⛰️Environmental hidden costs are highest in countries with diversifying food systems — those at the intersection between traditional and industrial agrifood systems — at $720 bn.
