In the JSA board meeting today it was decided that Kumagatani oyakata (former Tamaasuka, currently at Kataonami beya) is to inherit Otake beya (Oho's heya). The current Otake oyakata is about to reach the mandatory retirement age in September.

Sad, even shocking, news for those who follow the lower divisions: the very popular gyoji, Shikimori Kazenosuke, is no longer on the JSA's employees list. The circumstances are as yet unclear.

The YouTube algorithm blessed me with this little gem. It's an episode of "Lunch On!" (a long-running NHK series about lunches of working people, original name "sarameshi" サラメシ) from 2016, and the first segment is about yobidashi.

In the banzuke meeting today, 5 rikishi were promoted from Makushita to Juryo (the rest of the banzuke will be revealed Sept. 1):. Takasago beya: Asanoyama, Asahakuryu, Asasuiryu (Morning Green Dragon, formerly Ishizaki). Oshima beya: Kyokukaiyu. Sakaigawa beya: Nishinoryu.

Also mentioned: Aonishiki-Kusano-Hakuoho as "the youngsters who excited the spectators", and Tamawashi and Takayasu as "the veterans the youngsters should learn from". (3/3).

As for Onosato, "He started with good forward sumo, but about mid-way his bad pulling habit struck again". In turn, he should see this as a learning experience and do better next basho. They praised Kotoshoho for his calm attitude and excellent yusho. (2/3).

The YDC, in its regular post-basho meeting, expressed great disappointment in both Yokozuna. "Hoshoryu should immerse himself in practice, show up in proper form, and show results". (1/3).

Tamawashi is a marvel, a natural phenomenon. Old dog learning new tricks (yori kiri. ).

Dammit. Whar happened to Aonishiki? I guess yusho jitters. Kotoshoho yusho. Kusano disappointed (and so am I).

Kusano is, for the moment, Aonishiki's biggest fan.

Chiyoshoma tries his damnedest, but just can't buy a win. I'm sure he is relieved that the basho is over.

Atamin finishes with a win! But he still has to improve his gaburi technique. He should really make sure his mawashi is below the opponent's mawashi to start it.
