To date, research examining sleep in the context of the PTSD-CVD link has been largely unexamined, so this paper outlines recommendations for future research. Findings from these studies may eventually be incorporated into clinical practice.

Sleep disturbances have also been linked to CVD risk. Specifically, hypertension and inflammatory processes in the body are highly sensitive to sleep disturbances and can contribute to the development of CVD.

Research shows that up to 91% of individuals with PTSD experience sleep disturbances such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, restless sleep, and insomnia. Sleep disturbance before trauma may also be a risk factor for PTSD development.

There is strong evidence that PTSD precedes and predicts the onset of CVD. Additionally, there is compelling evidence for both sleep disturbance following trauma and the cardiotoxic effects of sleep disturbance.
