The award aims to stimulate a new generation of thinkers who can offer original, lively + topical contributions to the lines of political, cultural + educational inquiry which Hall pursued. Academic, journalistic, creative and other approaches to writing the essay are welcomed.

The prize will award £2,000 to a selected writer whose essay connects with and offers originality and value to a field of debate with which Hall engaged throughout his life and contributes a radical critique of contemporary society.

Just a few days remain to enter this year's Stuart Hall Essay Prize, open until 5pm GMT on Monday November 3, 2025. Open to UK-based entrants aged 18-30 inclusive, the prize invites new and unpublished writing that connects with Hall’s ideas and impacts broad public discourse.
