Thought-provoking on UK productivity puzzle. Tl;dr decline in prody growth vs other countries prob overstated, remaining difference could be function of decarbonisation directly and by diverting innovation and funds from more productive areas 🤪

For some context to today's many posts on popular names for boys in 2024, the top name is top out of some 7,000 different names. It and variations on it account for about 3 in every 100 baby boys registered.

The Corbyn-led party in 2017 got over 3 million more votes for Labour than the Starmer-led party did in 2024 (and 600k more even in 2019). I guess that’s a verdict of sorts 🤷‍♂️

Dear @BBCSport - who is this Primoz Poglic? Surprised to see a previously unheard-of rider so high up the GC classification! 🤪

All these years working with survey data and I’ve finally got to be in one myself, the interviewer kindly removing her rucksack so I could preserve for posterity!

Hearing the PM’s comments on Glastonbury/Kneecap reminds me that Mick Jones of The Clash was to be seen in Red Brigade T-shirt at the very time they’d kidnapped the Italian PM (tho just before they killed him)… 🤷‍♂️

From today's migration statistics. Last year, workers, students and student dependants all around double pre-CoVid levels, worker dependants about four times higher.

With Pakistan having closed its airspace, this evening’s flight from Paris doesn’t seem to have got the message 🤔

With the winning margin in Runcorn being six votes, have to wonder what this select band in particular felt today. Vote Rejoin get Reform 🤷‍♂️

Hearing John Curtice on @BBCRadio4 PM just now going on about ‘first election won by someone other than Lab or Con’. As he’s rather older than me, surely he’s old enough to remember the 2014 UK election for European Parliament which was ‘won’ by UKIP….

My nearest participating post offices are five miles away despite me living in urban sprawl on the Hants/Surrey border 😂

But oh dear, the old system won’t accept the apostrophe in my name. Trying without it leads eventually to ‘We cannot match your details’

That Runcorn by-election. 17.8% of the electorate turned out and voted Reform. While double Reform’s average at the General Election, only 20 seats in 2024 were won with that percentage of the electorate.

Dear @DVLAgovuk - your driving licence renewal online doesn’t work despite repeated efforts yesterday and today. There’s no routing or help on the system other than ‘Try Again’, no number on the letter you sent me, what’s a guy to do? 🤷‍♂️

With only around 700,000 people a year newly reaching driving age, where does demand for 1.95m tests come from? Do people typically need 3 tests to pass? 🤔

Soooo many terrible takes on today’s @UKSupremeCourt judgment from people who can’t have read even the first page which clearly states that it’s not about who’s a woman but about the meaning of the Equalities Act (which is just a law that can be changed at any time by Parliament)

Clickbait. To say only teeny percentage of potential first-time buyers could afford the *average* house price for an area is silly, as being able to leap halfway or even further up a ladder is very different from being able to get a foot on it.

Wales is the most difficult part of Britain for first-time buyers to buy a home, a new report finds.
