What do you do when a country's electorate boundary map is completely divorced from the reality on the ground? I don't know, but Papua New Guinea is about to find out. Thiago Opperman explains the problem today on @devpolicy:

It has proven very challenging to find out how the redistricting of PNG electorates in 2022 changed the electoral map, says Thiago Cintra Oppermann.

A campaigner tackling illegal logging in Papua New Guinea, arrested under the Cyber Crime Act for defamatory comment. The forestry regulator is the complainant (!), the remark is innocuous as they come. Eddie faces a max custodial term of 15 years. https://t.co/uk6NhJkmHJ

A Papua New Guinea guide to diplomatic polygamy. There are many prospects for partners but as Michael Kabuni writes, the existing ones may find themselves sharing the bed with even more.

In January we revealed how a China-born businesswoman in Papua New Guinea allegedly used her business to smuggle methamphetamine into Australia. Mei Lin built business ties to prominent PNG citizens including a former deputy PM. #OCCRP2024

Mei Lin is a prominent member of Papua New Guinea’s business community, with ties to influential locals. She’s also allegedly a key player in an audacious drug trafficking plot.

@Stret_Pasin There’s zero coverage of the conference in the AFR. Shows how a small of a player we are (globally…and perhaps regionally) and Australia doesn’t give a shit about investment in PNG except in so far as it impacts china’s influence 🤣

This is also a nice overseas shopping trip for the elite funded by government, SOEs, companies. This year it even features a prominent leader who has been charged with alleged domestic assault occasioning actual bodily harm in Sydney earlier this year

This editorial misses that the point of holding the conference in Sydney is to attract NEW investors. The problem with these conferences held every year in Sydney is that it is mostly the PNG elite talking to one another and to investors who are already invested in the country.
