Industry front groups Big Tobacco/Alcohol are manufacturing a false public consensus to promote their greedy-ass corporate vision of the future. No equity, labour rights, health, or environmental protections. It all about the 🤑💸💰🤑 .@ParabolaCenter.

Meanwhile, outside the UK drugwar-o-sphere. The Senate of Czechia just passed into law a bill that legalises possession of 100g of cannabis at home, and self-cultivation of up to three plants. The law comes into force in January.

Some UK Police & Crime commissioners have called for cannabis to be made a Class A drug . In this interview I shoot down this ridiculous idea, and try to map out a better way forward.

Quick correction - the Singapore death penalty is available for over 500g trafficking of cannabis, or 200g of resin - more than 2oz (you can buy up to 1oz in Colorado). Singapore do, however, actually execute people for such minor cannabis offences.

@MayorofLondon Arbour notes that if the 64milion identified by UNODC data as having an Substance Use Disorder - only 8% have access to drug treatment and health services. 'That should be our calling' on health provision . (Not wasting money on failed enforcement).17/.

Zedillo critiques the failure of the @MayorofLondon's cannabis commission to call for a regulated market. Decrim clearly not enough - does not deal with the harms of the illegal trade.16/.

The fundamental flaw is the conceptual one of prohibition - the wrong policy paradigm (punitive enforcement) for a public health and social policy challenge.15/.

Arbour notes growing demand for drugs even in the face of the untold billions spent criminalising use and interdicting supply. The market is still turning over 100s of $ billions every year for OCGs. 14/.

Zedillo notes how when one cartel is crushed another simply takes their place while the opportunity created by prohibition remains. It's just supply and demand economics. We have to destroy the illegal market through regulation.13/.

Tricky question about role of tech and AI by cartels - and how it can be fought. Obviously OCGs will exploit all tools available often better/faster than Govts. Again - the solution lies in taking control away from them. Prohibition is the opportunity they exploit. 12/.
