Never thought I'd live to see this. Gobsmacking. Could it be that rugby league has finally shed the provincial chip on its shoulder and will now allow itself to realise its potential? Could this be the most important night in 129 years?
@realDonaldTrump
Mate, do you have ANY sense of right and wrong? How would you like to be rendered immobile by an injection and then have your limbs cut off one by one while feeling everything? And have those responsible get away with it due to a “deal”. Empathy, Donald, empathy. For Christ sakes
Thanks to everyone who has called & written after the loss of my father, Norman Stanley Mascord, aged 97, yesterday. Dad served in the RAAF during WWII & did a lot of volunteer work in the early days of the Steelers. Your sympathy & kind words are appreciated by myself & Tammie.
The very fact the World Cup has tricked you into watching even 15 minutes of a developing nation playing rugby league because you expected a game to be close is EXACTLY what it’s there for. You wouldn’t normally watch those teams. You did. World Cup 1 You 0.
If
@SuperLeague
is a one-sixth French competition next year it should absolutely do social media posts in French and probably run a bilingual website. One hundred per cent.
I criticise the NRL but FIFA enforcing the bigoted laws of their backwards host nation by threatening with yellow cards those who stand up for equality makes me proud of a sport that openly campaigned for gay marriage at a grand final. These are the big issues, not rule changes.
Rob Burrow inspired many as a rugby league player. But he inspired exponentially more as a person. We all face terrible adversity in our lives. Precious few provide us with a lighthouse that guides us on the right path. Rob was one such person. We are sad but grateful.
A competition that can only get a total of 15,000 to a round of play-off matches in a couple of neighbouring towns is worried that adding a North American city of 10 million people won’t add much to their competition. No opinions on here from me anymore ... just observations.
Those lamenting the old rugby league and saying the game has gone soft: your rugby league is DEAD! It’s NEVER coming back, for legal and medical reasons. Go away. Start UFC with a ball or something. Good luck!
The two greatest things I've seen in 35 years at rugby league games happened earlier this year in Toronto and today in Hamilton. We are finally getting somewhere
#WCnzltga
How many specific refereeing mistakes can you remember from a year ago, five years ago, 10? But how many tries, wins, premierships, try-saving tackles do you remember? Bagging refs is the equivalent of “geez it’s hot today” - talking coz it feels like you gotta say something.
The thing that should be dawning on you by now is that wheelchair rugby league and women's rugby league can actually be bigger than men's rugby league in many parts of the world. Can and will, unless we stuff it up.
While other kids dreamed of meeting Mick Cronin or seeing Manly win the comp, I dreamed of rugby league goalposts being erected at an NFL stadium. I seriously started thinking about that stuff when I was 12 or 13. Today I saw it. The world really is an amazing place.
Seriously, some British fans don't understand the world the
@TOwolfpack
is dragging them into! What happens on the field is only one component of what pro sports clubs do in the 21st century.
Our problem five years ago was finding a competitive second semi. Now we’re trying to make pools more even. Come a long way in five years! Also I agree with those saying six again has adversely affected parity across the sport.
Today we had one of the great World Cup games between two teams who have existed as 13-a-side entities for - I just worked this out - 17 per cent of the sport's history. Don't tell me rugby league goes around in circles and never progresses. That's progress.
Brian McDermott yesterday pointed out that the criteria for being the 12th team in
@superleague
is much lower than it was when the comp was formed 25 years ago. "What on earth is happening with the game? Where is it going? It’s just walking into oblivion.” Probably the best quote
It's not about whether "people wanted"
@NRLcom
. Who cares if people "want" it? Is an independent media arm good for rugby league in the long term? Yes. Is it profitable? Yes.The horse and cart manufacturer doesn't like your Model T Ford? Of course he doesn't. You still keep it.
The fact the World Cup’s harshest critics now admit there are eight teams - that’s a big number for our sport - that demand inclusion is a feather in the cap of many hard working administrators over the past 30 years and the players who’ve supported teams outside the big three.
I have close to zero interest in soccer but this gave me goosebumps. Millions of humans use spectator sport to measure and make sense of the passing of time, which is why it’s often compared to religion
So I came over here with a heap of rugby league and music digitised that I planned to upload gradually to various platforms. Here's a great interview after the 1985 grand final that
@DebSpillane
did with Steve Mortimer
Surely if NRL can sell 65,000 seats to a club game double header in Las Vegas they can sell out an event a year in the U.K. where people have a tribal affection for the sport. The only question is: what event should that be?
Melbourne are actually proud of only having five locals play first grade in 25 years - and so they should be! Huge contrast to English attitude to expansion. You put teams where there are fans, not where there are players.
Seen here today: Bill Ashurst, Albert Kelly, Ralph Rimmer, Nigel Wood, Adam Fogerty but best of all about 100 British Serbs who would never go to any rugby game otherwise
Standing ovation for Jon Dutton. In the end, despite obstinance, self interest, political back-stabbing, myopia, betrayal and cynicism - plus a pandemic and cost of living crisis - he won. And if the game is not completely fucked, it will win big as a result, too.
Women's rugby league is the first thing I've seen in my lifetime that can slow the inexorable march of contact sport towards extinction. If you want rugby league to be around in the 22nd century, you should support it.
I couldn't believe it when I checked into my hotel for the first Wolfpack game & there was a live cross to Lamport on the evening news. The team that got kicked out had a higher profile in a giant city than the comp itself has in its home country. The tail got rid of the dog.
Lots of rugby league fans are Brexit thinkers who believe Catalans are just there for what they can do for the British game - ie, give us a decent Test team to play. They completely discount what Catalans might do for Catalans. You'll never win an argument with them so don't try.
Should be recorded that Willie Peters put his disappointment aside and stared straight down the barrel of the TV camera to tell Nathan Merritt to “keep fighting” after the Super League semi today, for those back in Oz who missed it.
I'm gonna change the way I used Twitter. I'm not gonna read everyone's comments. I'm just gonna say what I wanna say. Will respond only when useful and mute pests. I ain't got time to argue with people on here, OK?
This is my earliest attempt at commentary - and a very ugly all-in brawl, complete with kicking - in a 1986 Commonwealth Bank Cup trial match between Port Kembla and Warrawong High Schools. Footage considered too hot at the time and has been in the vault for the last 34 years.
The RFL sends its condolences to the family and many friends of Dave Hadfield, who passed peacefully at the age of 70 earlier today. His words and personality adorned Rugby League, the sport he loved the most.
I want to hear someone in authority at the RFL just call out the NRL clubs for what they are doing - sabotaging their own sport to preserve their businesses out of sheer spite because they have been beaten into America. Bugger the consequences. Tell it like it is.
They are two completely different things. Rejecting Toronto's application to rejoin this year was probably correct. Ruling out the number one sports market in the world forever when you've got very little going for you at home is, in my opinion, foolhardy.
It appears the Wolfpack lit a spark and just as when the ARL told the Broncos in 1993 to "go start your own competition if you don't like it", the people in North America are doing just that. The British game will end up seeing this as a great opportunity lost.
Rugby league footage of the year -
@brisbanebroncos
staffer picking up wooden spoons hurled over the gates overnight. Dare I call it a ... a ... wait for it ... SCOOP?
People here from all over the world including a head of state who flew in especially. Shoutouts from American athletes and movie stars. A full house at the Theatre of Dreams. It's already a transcendent moment for the sport.
Terrible that the venue of the final of a competition can be placed above the integrity of the competition itself. Foolish pride. If you can’t afford Wembley anymore, don’t play there.
There is a future for rugby league where people don't know any NRL sides and only follow what's on the BBC for two months each autumn of a Saturday. Two million of them have tuned in the last fortnight. This Golden Boot is for them.
Australia is so isolated and inward looking they think a game between two foreign countries being promoted by the Denver Broncos which is already on sale and has sold thousands of tickets will be called off if they won't release players. They'll just pick other players.
On reflection, I think the
@NRL
has actually done more with the Immortals in the last 36 hours than
@LeagueWeek
did since inventing it - which is as big a compliment as I can think of. Very classy to induct three pre-war players the way they did, congrats to all involved.
The fact Nine is warning it may not be able to afford to bid for the rights PROVES
@NRLcom
was necessary! It’s the ultimate vindication of its existence! HELLO? How can that threat be used to shut it down?
It's true there is a lot that isn't great about
#rugbyleague
. Most of it has to do with a lack of money. Personally I am bored with the same old, same old. Tonga and Toronto enchant me because they are not just new powers or teams but they bring with them thousands of new people.
Yes, the current CEO of the NRL will have to tread carefully in his public statements about Ben Barba now, given the investigation that cleared him before he got his job. Very carefully.
When Wigan did this 29 years ago, I had been at the Herald a week. They employed Dave Hadfield to cover the game. I took a day off and went anyway. They weren't too impressed. Remembering Dave tonight. What a special moment.
I would say that
@superleague
have cleared the first
#newbeginnings
hurdle. The product on the field, and the way it was marketed and presented at the stadia, did feel like it was really a bit new this weekend. It wasn't all bluster. Not turd polishing. It was good.
It takes a lot to shock me on social media these days. I knew Islamophobia was rife in sections of Australia. But “we won’t let black people in”?? Black people were there first. I am officially gobsmacked.
London is the most important city in the world in which rugby league is regularly played. It’s also my home. If I can play a role in this story that would be AWESOME.
I hope IMG provide a centralised merchandise option for rugby league in Britain and try to get the gear into high street stores. The way the clubs keep everything in-house is like their pie-and-a-pint attitude to expansion.
I really think Matt Cecchin’s decision should be a
#metoo
moment for
#rugbyleague
Anything more than pointing out a mistake should become taboo like sexism, racism and homophobia. I’m serious! Match officials have already committed suicide. We have to change.
Dublin's closer to most professional rugby league clubs than Cornwall. It need not be an issue that it's in another country, the same as Catalans and Toulouse overcome that minor inconvenience.
Half the teams in the World Cup would be stunned to attract 1000 to a home international against anyone. Their brands are being enhanced before our eyes in a neutral country which normally would have no interest in them.
Me: Rugby league has become so myopic, parochial and self destructive that there is nothing left in it for for me. I can't even be arsed watching
@TheMagicWeekend
, I care so little.
Rugby league: Hold my pastis.
