Grant draws on years of musical mastery in his exploration of the ensemble that pioneered jazz-classical fusion.

On October 17, 2013, four tuxedo-clad gentlemen stepped out on stage to pay homage to the MJQ. A few days shy of the 10th anniversary of our first gig, MJ New's debut album, Our Mr. Jackson, is out! https://t.co/jNlAmL24Tb

OUT NOW! “A Viennese Affair” was the first original I wrote for MJ New. Inspired by John Lewis’ “Blues on Bach,” I took a recognizable classical theme by Beethoven and infused it with harmony based on Gigi Gryce’s “Minority.” Check it out: https://t.co/RJYQ7hi153

"Versailles" is here — one of the first MJQ pieces to make it into MJ New's book! It combines 2 of my favorite aspects of MJQ's sound — intricate counterpoint + ebullient swing. 🎥Cyrus Shiva, engineering Andrew Jones https://t.co/oL944MrtB5

Putting this “bootleg” out, knowing that the live sound wasn't all it could be, felt like a risk. But I believed the music would speak for itself, and I'm grateful others are experiencing it that way. Thanks to @AllAboutJazz & @prauch1956 for taking it in.

6/6 Black identity is the inevitable byproduct of the willingness to love ourselves as we are and share that love with the world.

5/6 28 years later, I'm still answering those questions. Looking back at the young man I was, I want to tell him that Black identity is not something to be dictated but to be discovered. And the identity that Black Art was trying to define can't be reduced to any one thing.

4/6 Black Art, my debut recording as a leader, was a stop on that same journey. Surrounded by the brilliant voices of the jazz renaissance of the early 90s, I questioned how I might express something worthy of notice and best honor the musical legacy I had longed to be a part of.

3/6 In the company of those wins came adult responsibilities and uncertainties of an artist’s life. As I struggled to balance these challenges and figure out who I wanted to be, wearing locks became a way to declare—if just to myself—my desire for reinvention & to define myself.

2/6 The decision to lock my hair came as I passed through the honeymoon phase of my move to NYC. The hard work and dues-paying had brought dream gigs, a major-label record deal, and opportunities that confirmed my youthful confidence in my choice of profession.

1/6 In the early 90s, I wore my hair in “dreadlocks” (now called locks or locs). A couple of months after arriving in Portland '97, I invited friends over to our apartment, and each person cut off a lock or two until they lay in a pile on the floor.

6/6 Charnett Moffett-54, Dwayne Burno, Tony Reedus and so many more — against the same cold realities? As we create new possibilities for what Black thriving means, this is one legacy that I will gladly relinquish.

5/6 So, how is it that 50 years of health advances, education, and international recognition didn’t inoculate my generation’s brilliant artists — Kenny Kirkland-43, Roy Hargrove-49, Mulgrew Miller-57, James Williams-58, Geri Allen-60, Ralph Peterson-58...

4/6 All my life, I attributed these deaths to circumstances that civil rights, voting rights, equal education, fair housing, and affirmative action should surely remedy.

3/6 I hear every day on the news that Black people are at increased risk of mortality by {name the health issue}. I know the history of Black Jazz musicians dying — Charlie Parker-34, Bud Powell-41, John Coltrane-40, Eric Dolphy-36, Lee Morgan-33 & so many more before their time.
