“When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, our greatest desire is to lay down our lives for Jesus. Yet the thought of self-sacrifice never even crosses our minds, because sacrifice is the Holy Spirit’s ultimate expression of love.” @myutmost

Great questions from “My Utmost” today - “Is our attitude today an attitude that flows from our vision of God? Are we expecting God to do greater things than He has ever done before? Is there a freshness and a vitality in our spiritual outlook?”

“If we are truly surrendered, we will never be aware of our own efforts to remain surrendered. Our entire life will be consumed with the One to whom we surrender.” #surrender @myutmost

“This total surrender to “the love of Christ” is the only thing that will bear fruit in your life. And it will always leave the mark of God’s holiness and His power, never drawing attention to your personal holiness.” @myutmost

A challenging question from Oswald Chambers to pastors and teachers - “ Is the Word of God tremendously penetrating and sharp in me as I hand it on to you, or does my life betray the things I profess to teach?” @myutmost

I’ve learned afresh recently that many people don’t leave churches b/c of the theology the leadership holds, but b/c of the way the leadership holds that theology. How we believe is just as important as what we believe. And in many ways, how we believe reveals what we believe.

“When we come to the end of ourselves, not just mentally but completely, we are able to “receive the Holy Spirit.” “Receive the Holy Spirit” — the idea is that of invasion. There is now only One who directs the course of your life, the Lord Jesus Christ.” @myutmost

“Natural devotion may be enough to attract us to Jesus, to make us feel His irresistible charm, but it will never make us disciples. Natural devotion will deny Jesus, always falling short of what it means to truly follow Him.” @myutmost

The miracle of Christmas is God "with" us offering us hope, love, joy and peace. The mystery of Christmas is God "in" us, and is the fulfillment of that hope, love, joy and peace. #ChristInUs #Miracle #Mystery #Fulfillment

To forgive someone who's sinned against us is to die a little. A little crucifixion. To die to our thirst for revenge. It is a good, blessed, ego-slaying death.

The Church is not a religious community of worshippers of Christ but is *Christ himself* who has taken form among people. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer (This is such a staggering truth that should produce awe, humility and love among Christ-followers)

So very true for pastors as well. Thanks @jimcymbala. We are to be renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

We should be encouraged when we go to church, but we can’t live off the church service. It’s not a filling station that we go back to each week. We have to pick up the Bible and walk with Jesus every day.

The church is the single, multiethnic family promised by the creator God to Abraham. It was brought into being through Israel’s Messiah, it was energized by God’s Spirit; and it was called to bring the transformative news of God’s rescuing justice to the whole creation. NT Wright

If today finds you weeping, hurting, needing time to wrestle with grief & loss… it’s okay. You don’t have to try to quickly sweep up the shattered pieces of your heart. Jesus understands what it’s like to deeply feel human emotions like grief & heartache. Let Him comfort you.
