I write my story, then add page breaks to see how it flows. Typically, I aim for 15 spreads. That's about 32 pages. Sometimes, a story goes over. Critique partners and agent can always tell me it's too long. I don't always make the most efficient use of words on the early drafts.
And, I'm sure it's up to the agency/editor/publisher...and it also has to do with price (more expensive to print a higher spread count obviously...and if you're not established it's more of a gamble)... but still super confusing!!! What do we query with?
