Is it time to start working w parents of 2nd lang learners to empower them to view their home lang as not something that would marginalize their children, but instead something to be celebrated? #langchat

Rather than making Ss talk back to you the way you want Ss to be heard, create conditions to make young folks want to sing. @chrisemdin #actfl19

The language coach facilitates goal-making, is conscious of input to get to the meaningful output of the learner, ensures that learning is happening, checks for successful meaning-making & transfer by the learner. @psandrock #ACTFL19

Content-knowledge or class activity is not mere end goal, rather part of a learning progression towards what the learner wants to be able to do w language. The real goal is not a deep study of linguistics; it is real, practical, personal. @psandrock #ACTFL19

Things I’m beginning to understand: 1) we are teaching people, not languages, 2) no one listens to you unless they know you care about them, 3) language is meaning before structure #ACTFL19

Use the same artwork across multiple language levels by scaffolding for depth w these 4 steps: 1. What do you see? 2. What do you think? 3. What do you wonder? Then share relevant context (about artist, process, etc) to drive further curiosity + connection #actfl19 #ArtsinWL

.@lasenorasara, who also won, had the great idea of letting the Ss pick the reader. I can't wait to talk about book choices in L2 & then poll the students!

Two of my colleagues & I won a class set of readers from @FluencyMatters! Beyond winning, I'm so thankful for all of this team's products, professional development, mentoring, and it's just fun to be with this group 😁. #ACTFL19
