History really does repeat itself, just with better technology. It's clear our species knows how to turn a blind eye, and in part that is down to physics. How long we live dictates our priorities in the end.

Subscription models which allow endless consumption of games are damaging. These business models only benefit the platform holder and pay out best for certain kinds of games, depriving gamers and ruining games as an artform as only certain kinds of games can make enough money.

Dragons Lair (mobile port) vs Temple Run?. Basically DL's quality obliterates TR, and both games share basic and occasional directional inputs but TR made endless more money on same platforms. I guess rate of input and dopamine feedback matters more than quality.

The UK taxes absolutely everything now, so why not just straight up do a subscription model.

It used to be the thing to not smile in photos, and then to smile in photos, and now to imagine photos that never existed. Memories aren't as important as current experiences when people are trained to have shorter attention spans or value digital hierarchies.

Fact is, creatives haven't even slightly exhausted the possibilities of wheels yet so rushing to reinvent or change for the sake of change is quite an inexperienced view.

Expressing faint horror about the loss of critical thought among younger people. You don't even need to go that far back: anyone born into an era of smartphones is compromised. Prior to smartphone platform holders gaining near full control over thought, the net was very cool.

Perhaps childish baby words or abbreviations should in use for more than a couple of years. I hardly think babble on tiktok is lasting or representative of anything other than passing fads due to the nature of the platform / bots.

Learning from other people's mistakes vs other people's successes is the same as learning the piano, only being taught duff notes. Still no sign of what works and why.

That means don't sign up for trash services that promise released games. Just listen to real, known, successful indies. You don't need quantity of advice. Just quality. Reduce discord / social media. Never take business advice from gamers. Talk to real known successful indies.

Another sad video of the "I can't write indie games anymore" genre. A lot to learn here. What struck me most came early on: He engaged heavily with his community like a good PR person, but he was deluged with so many opinions that he got lost.

The new Ice Cube movie, War of the Worlds may be really bad - as a movie. But I think the campy production values and pacing would work pretty good as a narrative rpg with some QTE and strategy thrown in.

20 years from now, most computers will just be dumb terminals - essentially display / peripherals but the prices will keep going up and all licenses will be contentious subscription models.

Sometimes playing a game or watching a film, reading a book can be different at different times in your life. I find that I can recognise these if it feels like the pace of it is different to my pace. That's when you know it might not just be just taste, and you can return to it.

Not sure it would really be relevant for a modern portfolio, but it is a talking point for sure. And impressive.

Porting old games to challenging hardware basically satisfies that programmer kink to optimize or improve a bit of code someone posted, but in a more puzzle/game-like way.
