Re: Sean Chu
Leadership, like democracy, is built on trust. When a public official/servant breaks that trust it is in their responsibility to respond appropriately and with humility.
Family routines are done, and I am processing what happened today. It has been difficult to think about anything else after a particularly unenjoyable day at the office for Council. Here is where my head and heart are at:

While I have no direct connection with "HH", I certainly do with Jyoti. This is what compels me to write this evening. Calgary, our mayor possesses otherworldly courage and is often the primary lightning rod for hate that I didn't want to believe existed in our City.
/4
The personal experience offered by
@HHCalgary97
has opened a window that I am incapable of imagining on my own. I wasn't sure how to respond to these posts and was content to simply observe and assess until
@JyotiGondek
shared what she did today.

The Calgary to Banff rail project needs to happen for so many reasons. Beyond the obvious, such as the recent parking issues being outlined is the larger proof testing/habit building. Rail is the past and the future.
I am gutted as I am confronted with the fact that progress often comes after a high cost and deep pain has been extracted/inflicted upon certain members of our society. Today has helped me see that in ways I haven't before.
/2
It is crazy how all-consuming this past season has been. My amazing wife Anna has been an absolute rock and taken on a lot more of the daily routines to allow me to be out and about. My kids have lamented the temporary loss of dinner times and pillow fights. I am grateful. 🥰
It is gutting to hear that Mayor Gondek and her family endured a protest in front of their home last night. The issues we face together as a City are real and impact people in profound ways but acts like this deepen divides and entrench antagonisms.
I read commentary awhile ago about how our world is financially bifurcating between homeowners and non-homeowners and the alarming reality of how little the first group thinks of the second group.
Nothing like 24hrs in a public hearing to hit that point home.
#yyccc
Our world is increasingly divided between homeowners and non-homeowners and it is alarming how little the first group thinks of the second group.
I care about community character, trees, and local self-determination. All of this MUST honour the above fact.

Looking forward to working hard for Calgarians and hitting the ground running with my 25-Initiative Plan, informed by Ward 12 residents. You’ve made it very clear you have no time for divisive politics. Positivity wins! Thank you for your trust.

On this, the last night of Hanukkah, when the 8th candle is lit, I want the Jewish community in Calgary to know that you are loved and appreciated. I hope that you found and continue to find many moments of Shalom whilst carrying incredible pain as a community. Happy Hanukkah!
Yesterday at Council, I was honoured to present a Notice of Motion to advance the work of an Indigenous Gathering Place in the City of Calgary. After much deliberation and questions through other Councillors, it passed unanimously.

This morning, The City of Calgary released the 2023 Housing Needs Assessment. This report highlights how serious and urgent this issue continues to be. Based on 2021 data, there are 84,600 households in need, which means that they earn less than 65% of the Calgary median income1/
On Friday, City Administration will present a proposal to update Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw, as requested by previous Council direction. Within the proposed changes are reductions in parking minimums for new residential development. 1/x
There has been a lot of commentary during this Public Hearing that this has nothing to do with affordability. It is data like this that require this proposal to be taken seriously despite the many issues that are being raised around the process and politics of the moment.
Calgary City Council was presented with a series of recommendations to deliver more housing.
It would have made it easier to build the homes that people need.
But the gatekeepers stood their ground.
Here's what happened.

The best decision-making happens closest to the issues. Entrenching ideological politics in Municipal governance would be a massive step in the wrong direction.
70% of Albertans have said they do not want the divisiveness of political parties disrupting their communities. Municipal elected officials need to continue to work on local challenges and not focus on the interests of their parties.
Learn more about it here:
The Bowness Community Association is running low on bottled water and there are families in need. If you are able help, please drop some off at: 7904 43 Ave NW, Calgary AB T3B 4P9
I support these Land Use Bylaw changes, including the reduction of parking minimums, as they will lead to a greater mix of housing, application predictability, and an increase in the density of established area growth, in line with Calgary’s Municipal Development Plan. 4/4

My lens was permanently altered by the Blanket Exercise years back and continues to evolve as the opportunities to, listen, learn and grow present themselves. Today I am struck by the willingness and ability of the indigenous community to forgive and move forward together

Hey Ward 12, our

is back in the news and under scrutiny. This project has been scrutinized from all angles. This is just a friendly reminder that one of the most qualified light rail experts in Canada is the CEO of our Green Line Team.
This is tragic especially when The City had already made multiple concessions to get to the deal they just walked away from. Hoping there is a path forward through all of this.

He informed me of the Flames intention to pull the plug on the Event Centre deal.
Why? Here’s what I know:
It was good to see funding from the Province to explore rail solutions, including between our airport, and C-Train lines, but the work is just beginning. We need to start having the conversations that move these projects forward

The repairs are now estimated to take an additional 3-5 weeks to complete.
Following further investigation of our water feedermain, significant additional damage has been found.

then we cannot prioritize homes for cars over homes for people. Many cities across North America, including Edmonton, have removed parking minimums altogether, and have not seen widespread concerns about a lack of spaces. 3/x
Beyond our embattled c-train line most Calgarians don't have a frame of reference for how usable and transformational a functional rail line could be. We should all be excited about the benefits of projects like this:
Getting the Green Line to the point that is ready for general construction has been painstakingly slow for so many reasons. More delays are the last thing this project needs.

The more you delay Green Line the more expensive you make it. This is crucial transportation infrastructure that Calgarians need. Get building and don't stop.
These land use changes allow for more housing density and reduce barriers to providing additional housing options in established areas. If we want to be serious as a city to have livable, walkable, affordable communities, 2/x

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!
I am so grateful for the support I have received over this journey. I am grateful to live here and have the neighbours that I do.
I agree with Cllr. Wyness. Tribal politics are already troublesome and the impacts would be felt most acutely at the municipal/neighbourhood decision making level. Everyone should feel like their local Cllr is accessible and open to feedback.
This will result in dysfunctional party politics replacing good governance.
Municipal politics is dynamic and dependent on a diverse group making decisions to benefit a diverse community.
We don't need to hide behind a party and have votes whipped.
