In 1917, she moved to San Antonio, where she opened an escuelita to educate young Mexican American children and later became a translator at the county hospital. In 2023, she became the second Latina featured on a US coin.

In 1911, she helped organize the First Mexicanist Congress to empower Mexican people to fight injustice and founded and led La Liga Feminil Mexicanista in Laredo. During the Mexican Revolution, she joined the Cruz Blanca, crossing the border to nurse the wounded.

Born #OTD in 1885, Jovita Idár was a journalist, activist, educator, and suffragist who believed in the press’ ability to keep the powerful accountable and frequently wrote about racism, women's rights, and the Mexican Revolution.

The peaceful march turned violent when the L.A. Sherrif’s Department arrived, shooting tear gas into the crowd and beating back protestors, leading to injuries and the deaths of three people, including Mexican-American Journalist Rubén Salazar.
