Preparations for Soldier of Orange in London postponed - due to the precarious social situation because of the Coronavirus and the UK government’s request that we make our future venue available to support operations of the ExCel Centre as a temporary NHS hospital if needed. 1/2

He received his training in Canada and returned to Britain as an RAF flight instructor. After the war, Jonker was involved in the founding of the Museum Engelandvaarders. He was a dear friend of the Soldaat van Oranje - De Musical team and will be dearly missed. (5/5)

After an hour the Navy ship was able to pull them aboard at a safe distance. When he arrived in Britain, Jonker came in contact with the Dutch Prince Bernhard. Jonker, who was eager to join the Allied war effort, was helped by the Prince to enlist in the @RoyalAirForce. (4/5)

At high sea the boat’s motor became damaged. On 30 July, after 5 days of rowing, waiting, sailing & surviving a storm, the crew encountered a British Navy vessel. However unbeknownst to Jonker and his comrades their small boat had floated directly into a field of sea mines. (3/5)

Eddy Jonker started his Engelandvaart journey on 25 July 1943, leaving occupied Netherlands bound for Britain. With a small boat, he and ten others successfully managed to traverse 20 kilometres of the heavily German patrolled Haringvliet estuary to reach the North Sea. (2/5)

During the war the BBC's started the 'V for Victory' campaign used an audible V through its Morse code rhythm ( ···_ ). This paralleled the opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, which the BBC used as its call-sign in broadcasts to occupied Europe for the rest of the war.

In early 1942, dissatisfied with the reception of 'her' Engelandvaarders, Queen Wilhelmina used her personal funds to found a London-based club for the intrepid Dutch Engelandvaarders arriving in Britain. Premises were found at 23 Hyde Park and was referred to as the Oranjehaven.

Queen Wilhelmina arrived in Britain on 13 May 1940 and took charge of the Dutch government in exile. With help from the #BBC she began broadcast messages to the Dutch people over #RadioOranje, many of whom listened in secret via illegally hidden radios.

In April 1941, following Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema and his friends distribution of the Leiden Manifesto, Erik was arrested and jailed for a week in the so called ‘Oranjehotel’ in Scheveningen. #SoldierOfOrange #Quote #WWII

@UniLeiden @UniLeidenNews In the Leiden Manifesto the students spoke out against the growing influence of German national-socialism at the University. On the night of the 14th of February 1941 this manifesto was plastered all over Leiden. #SoldierOfOrange
