If you hate Muslims, all of Islam, & don’t think progressive forms of Islam are ‘real’ Islam, then we fundamentally disagree in a way that is core to my very being. However, epistemologically, I am willing to accept that I might be wrong about Islam, but in practice I’m certain.

We must never be intimidated by those hostile to our values, freedoms, and way of life. Yielding would cede authority, self-determination, and sovereignty. It begins subtly, then escalates to overt control. https://t.co/QW0hpSNWeG

3/ One Muslim student thanked us at the end. Another Muslim student asked for advice on how to approach a family member who is getting drawn into Islamist extremism. I'm convinced outreach work can make a real positive difference.

2/ Proud to have spoken alongside two incredible people, both of whom are survivors of two separate terror attacks. Despite everything they’ve been through, they continue to show bravery every single day they do this work.

1/ Resilience in Unity successfully put on another event on terrorism and extremism, this time at Royal Holloway University of London. We spoke to students studying a wide array of subjects, including those on the terrorism and security programme.

I feel like the crazy person in movies screaming about how the end is nigh, but unless we figure out how to align AI with human goals, civilisation might cease to exist. Interestingly, the UK government is leading the world on taking this existential risk seriously.

AI safety / alignment theoreticians were warning about this years ago before the LLM revolution even took over. The *severe* risk posed by AI models developing survival 'instincts' cannot be overstated. https://t.co/nBghda50ib

The chancellor may have more room for manoeuvre than she’s letting on, but will she be bold enough to do the right thing on budget day?

Whatever you believe the solutions to our ills to be, it would be incredibly tragic if we destroyed the country by way of trying to fix it. Remember, things can always get worse. Always.

Interesting. It seems, at least back then, the yanks were testing some of their sensitive experimental planes above the British Isles. https://t.co/WglDGvopLW

I'm saddened that such a brilliant mind with so much potential wasted away such an opportunity. No one should be celebrating the death of political rivals, no matter how abhorrent, and as a society we need hold those in positions of power accountable if they celebrate violence.

8/ I bring this up is to remind everyone that we all have a duty to protect each other from extremism and radicalisation. This is also about the kind of society we want to live in. I want us all to feel a genuine connection with one another. All good starts from there.

7/ ...because there's another uncomfortable truth, if not a greater one: Any one of us might one day become radicalised to the point of engaging in actual violence. I'll leave you with that.

6/ Suddenly the good people deserve everything the world has to offer, and the bad people are evil to such a degree that they become subhuman and thus deserving of violence; ultimately, even total eradication...

5/ Some lies we tell ourselves have social utility, and in moderation, this particular lie might have social uses that actually benefit society. That said, extremists take this exact way of viewing the world... well... to an extreme.

4/ The real world is full of moral ambiguity, and that unsettles us. So we construct simpler worlds in our minds, where things are clear. Where there are “good people” and “bad people.”

3/ Suddenly it’s not so simple, and that’s deeply uncomfortable to most of us. I’ve met people imprisoned for acts of retributive violence which, if we truly knew the backstory, most of us would quietly admit were understandable, even if still unjustifiable.

2/ Of course, most (hopefully all) of us would never commit atrocities, terrorism, rape, or murder for pleasure. But effecting harm upon someone who has harmed one your loved ones?
