You may see your role as a coach as providing info & skills around exercise & nutrition. There's an element of truth to this. The more accomplished & successful coaches provide a whole lot more. Being able to upskill clients in other areas of their lives is of equal importance.

Self-efficacy underpins your clients progress & can be measured using psychometric testing. You can think of self-efficacy as self-confidence except that it's deep seated in the sub-conscious. Clients may outwardly be saying one thing whilst they actually believe something else.

As a coach it's easy to make the assumption that certain clients are difficult to work with. In some cases, this may be true, it's also worthwhile reflecting on your own practice. Sometimes the problem might be you, reflecting on your own practice & being self-aware is important

We all make mistakes, that is human nature, As the proverb goes “to err is human”. What is more important is what we do when we make a mistake. You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs is also reasonably accurate so we should view mistakes as a valuable learning lesson.

Mahatoo (1989) states: motives are suggested as the specific motivational element that directs the consumer′s drive towards a particular response. Thus, while needs generate the response tendency, motives determine the specific behavioural action.

Relaxation can take many forms; cognitive forms of relaxation would include Self-awareness/Imagery/Goal-directed visualisation & Mindfulness meditation. Guided imagery & these other relaxation techniques may be useful in helping clients perceive themselves as fitter & healthier.

What are your USP's? If you can’t answer this straightaway, off the top of your head, then you need to give this some serious thought. This should be part of your elevator pitch.

It may seem like a strange question to ask but understanding how your clients make decisions is important if you are going to help them make lifestyle behaviour changes. Rational and irrational thoughts can both help and hinder a client’s progress.

Setting milestones is important. Lifestyle changes will be achieved by making small adjustments on a weekly basis. In cognitive behavioural terms this is referred to as chunking.

Research shows that when people hear their own reasons for making a change, they are far more likely to follow through and successfully achieve a lifestyle change. It is this fact that motivational interviewing (MI) relies on for its success.

Don’t fall into the question-and-answer trap. The Q & A trap is one of the many traps that reduce the effectiveness of communication and coaching as noted in motivational interviewing. Unless you are made aware of this it is very natural to want to do this.
