The Virgil Thomson Fellowship is awarded competitively to SAM members at any phase of their careers to support research on the history, creation, and analysis of American music on stage and screen--this includes opera! Details:

The Eileen Southern Fellowship honors a pioneering historian who helped to propel the study of Black music history. It supports SAM members (any career phase) undertaking research on music of the African diaspora in the Americas. Details:

The Anne Dhu McLucas Fellowship is open to SAM graduate student members pursuing research (archival or fieldwork) on traditional music (music in the oral tradition) or Native American/First Nation music. Check out our website for details!

The John Koegel Latin American & Latinx Music Fellowship supports SAM members’ research on Latin American musical life, including musics of South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and representations of these culture areas worldwide. Details:

All educators (including K-12, curators, performers, etc.) are welcome to apply for the Hampsong Education Fellowship in American Song, which supports the development of curricular & co-curricular projects using primary sources in American song. Details:

Calling all (long) 19th-century enthusiasts! The John and Roberta Graziano Fellowship is for you, supporting projects on music of this period with U.S. connections. SAM members, apply by November 1!

The Edward T. Cone Fellowship funds SAM members whose research focuses on the history, creation, and analysis of American concert music. Past awardees have explored Helen Hopekirk’s piano works, music & politics in 20th c. Chile, and more! Details:

SAM’s Paul Charosh Independent Scholar Fellowship supports music research by independent scholars and encourages their participation in SAM conferences. Individuals who are not current SAM members are eligible and welcome to apply. Details:
