A new study using micro-CT imaging to demonstrate a larger cortical osteocyte lacunar volume in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and microvascular disease compared with patients without MVD #openaccess #ASBMR @Snapastian @eth_bone @frost_nielsen https://t.co/8H4w7MO2ep

Finally, we show that lacunar volumes are smaller in the compact bone compared to the spongy bone in participants with type 2 diabetes. However, when comparing to published data on healthy individuals it is the opposite indicating a decrease of lacunar volume with T2D

Additionally, the density of these lacunae in the trabecular bone was associated with blood sugar levels in type two diabetes, independently of MVD.

Lacunae were more spherical (round) and of a greater volume which may be an indication that osteocytes, the cells which live in these lacunae, are losing the ability to sense mechanical stimuli.

@EvaWoelfel We found that in the compact bone of individuals with microvascular disease and type 2 diabetes, the size and shape of these lacunae were altered compared to individuals with type 2 diabetes but without microvascular disease.

@EvaWoelfel In this study we investigated the effect of microvascular disease in type 2 diabetes on the bone structure. We looked at tiny voids in the bone matrix called osteocyte lacunae, which contribute to sensing mechanical forces and maintaining bone health.
