I spoke about this issue here (among others) at this excellent @CSISAfrica event several years ago.

Key lesson: (lack of) international response. A common theme in recent coups has been emboldened militaries knowing they'll face little to no resistance. Washington, specifically, no longer imposes real consequences and there's been no explanation for the departure from precedent.

While many people -- including activists and opposition folks inside the country and out -- were celebrating the November 2017 coup, I wrote this and received a lot of flak for it: "In #Zimbabwe . the dictator may be gone, but the dictatorship remains.".
