There was a real rush to do unpleasant stories about bad people after the Sopranos, which is totally understandable because it was hard to tell those stories for a long time. But I think there's now a real deficit of amiable/optimistic stories out there.
Every negative critique of PROJECT HAIL MARY I’ve seen is basically “I resent this movie’s amiable tone.” Which strikes me as yet more proof it’ll have pretty solid legs, since most people don’t want to be made miserable.

I think my favorite thing about Kevin Willard isn’t his lack of commitment, his poor recruitment, or his inability to perform in march. It’s his ability to make stupid quotes that totally overshadow anything positive he’s done.
