Amazing anecdote from David Mamet about Tom Stoppard in @TheFP: "Steven Spielberg asked Tom to write the screenplay for Jaws, and Tom said he couldn’t as he was writing a play for the BBC. Spielberg said, 'I'm offering you a fortune to collaborate with me on a Hollywood

Legendary playwright Tom Stoppard was a Holocaust survivor and an immigrant, but he wrote the most English and Anglophile of works, writes David Mamet for The Free Press.

RIP Allan Ahlberg. All his books with Janet are wonderful, but Peepo! is perhaps my favourite book I have read to my sons: just radiates warmth & perfectly captures the loving chaos of a house with small children (plus a slice of WWII social history too)

Given the recent announcements about Latin, this struck a chord: “the Government is more interested in flattening and levelling down school practice than it is identifying excellence” HT ⁦@RadleyAcademic

Kind of symbolic that the main (only?) Brexit freedom Labour are taking advantage of is to tax education.

In 2019, Notre-Dame burned down, and Hammersmith Bridge was shut to cars due to cracks. Today, Notre-Dame reopens, even more glorious than before. Meanwhile, Hammersmith Bridge remains shut to cars and will be for at least another 5yrs. What a pathetic testament to Britain’s

Relatability: The seductive but misguided idea of confining children’s learning to what is most relevant to their current lives, and the harm it does to children who have most to gain from the broader horizons school can open up, are well explained here. https://t.co/DuWVZXZkPY

@theobertram (C) We're moving from a time when we had a large and growing workforce supporting a small number of retirees to one where demand for support is larger and ever growing. And the population haven't adjusted their expectations of what a "good economic settlement" looks like yet.

In 2013, I wrote a book about educational myths. I *didn't* include learning styles. Why? Because even in 2013, so much research had already been published showing they were bunk. Didn't feel worth me going over it all again. It's now 2024. What's in @TheEconomist ?

Labour’s Budget needed to address an economy suffering from decades of mismanagement, structurally weakened by previous failed attempts to arrest decline; a state rapidly losing popular legitimacy; a social contract that is literally a joke. It did not:

PM here on how important it is for students to have continuity in their studies, but doesn't really care if independent school children have to leave their schools mid-GCSE/AL because of VAT. One law for him, one law for us.

Would be great to see similar attention from cabinet ministers on the hundreds of thousands of people who’ve been unable to book driving tests for the last four years. Unlike the Oasis reunion tour, that actually IS a public service that the government is responsible for!

Oasis aren't a public service. It's not the job of the government to help you get concert tickets. For what it's worth, they're almost certainly getting back together for the money. In a world where Labour control pricing, there would probably be no Oasis tour anyway..

Yeah, but it's really Oasis that's the monopoly here, right? It's them you need to report to the CMA, so that they can be broken up into competing Oases.

Ticketmaster holds enough market share to be considered a monopoly, especially considering the demand for these tickets. https://t.co/DMjbQtFzli

Seems as good a day as any to point out that, according to official estimates, UK public sector productivity is lower now than it was when Oasis released Be Here Now (the data doesn't go as far back as Definitely Maybe).
