MAUVE survey astronomers @awattsup_, Barbara Catinella & @astroquokka have used @ESO's VLT to map the gas streaming from nearby galaxy NGC 4383, showing how the space between galaxies fills with elements - and giving clues to why star formation stops.

The number of spacecraft heading to the Moon is increasing quite quickly - you need >20m antennas to communicate to lunar distances. I wonder who has some of those?

Why is doing stuff in space so hard? 😓Its remote and extreme conditions are beyond anything we experience here on Earth. But Australia’s scale and range of environments from Antarctic to our deserts is a great training ground

Location, location, location - just as important in spacecraft tracking as realestate. Awesome work again by the @UtasSpace team. The important moments happened with the spacecraft pretty low in the sky from Hobart, but beautiful clear images and telemetry.

When @NASA's @MissionToPsyche launched early on Saturday morning Australian time, the @UTAS_ antennas in Hobart were ready to support the critical payload separation. Check out from about 1:52 in the video

A beautiful shot that brings back lots of memories 📡 Travel restrictions over the last few years have left us with a backlog of things to be done at our "mainland" observatories and Brett enjoyed this sunset so much he is going back for more.

This antenna was constructed in the @UTAS_ physics workshop about 40 years ago. It was the first large parabolic antenna we operated and despite its modest size it has collected the data for nature papers. I'm looking forward to having it back in regular action again soon

Congratulations to @isro for the successful landing of the #Chandrayaan3 mission at the lunar south pole and deploying a lunar rover. It's starting to get really busy on the Moon. Did you know that radio communication to the moon needs antennas of around 20m or bigger?

This is a big challenge. Our current methods for tracking space objects both active and "junk" worked adequately when globally launched about 100 satellites a year. We are now launching more than 1000 a year 🫤

Mysterious objects on WA beaches, fireballs in the sky over Melbourne and northern Tasmania. Globally we're launching more rockets, which means lots more space junk. Our research team is trying new ways to find and track it to help keep us all safe.
