“Broken promises lead to broken dreams for the women and girls of Afghanistan”, says @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres. Read his call to action to keep women and girls at the centre of action via @UN_News_Centre:

I am alarmed to see promises made to Afghan women and girls by the Taliban being broken. I strongly appeal to the Taliban to keep their promises to women and girls and their obligations under international human rights law.

As we mark #DayOfTheGirl, I think of the courageous and resilient girls and women I met during my visits to Afghanistan. The hard-won gains of women and girls must be preserved and their rights must be upheld. Without them, the Afghan economy and society will not recover.

I was honoured to be sworn into office today by @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres as the Executive Director of @UN_Women and to take up the torch to uphold the rights of all women and girls across the world.

Today marks my first day in office with @UN_Women Deputy Executive Directors @regner_asa and @abhatiaunwomen. @UN_Women works to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment across the world. Only with equality for all women can we achieve the @UN #GlobalGoals.
