"Heat shocks make painters paint more brightly" was not on my climate impacts bingo card. Cool paper by @ShuheiKitamura. No wonder Dutch renaissance painting was so dark - it was freezing in the Netherlands in the 1600s.

These results indicate that UFO sightings lead voters to believe that UFOs are “unidentified threats” that warrant further defense enhancements and scientific research. UFOs seem to have no small impact on politics and public policy, although their true identity is unknown. (8/9).

In addition, although the effect is weak, I found evidence suggesting that UFO sightings lead voters to believe that the government should increase spending on technology and science. By contrast, I did not find a significant effect on welfare spending. (7/9).

Moreover, I found that UFO sightings alter voters' beliefs on policies. In particular, I found that UFO sightings lead voters to believe that the government should increase defense spending. (6/9).

Breaking down the effect on the presidential elections by election year, I found that a similar effect tended to appear in each election year analyzed except 2016. In the 2016 race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the effect was null or even slightly negative. (5/9).

I found that UFO sightings increased the vote share of the Republican candidates in presidential elections between 2000 and 2016: One std increase in UFO sightings increases the vote share by 1.32 std. Therefore, the effect size is considerable. (4/9)

I take the first step towards investigating the influence of UFOs on the political beliefs and behaviors of voters. In this paper, I estimated the effect of UFO sightings using the instrumental variables method with cloud cover adopted as the source of exogenous variation. (3/9)

A congressional hearing on UAP/UFOs was held this May, 50 years after the previous congressional hearing on this phenomenon. Despite the enormous popular interest in and continued security concerns regarding UFOs, little is known about their impact on voters. (2/9).

As I am educated as an economist, but not intensively in any other field, I have great respect for the knowledge of experts in other fields. Please share it with me. My subjective gut feeling is that this is going to be a cool project. (4/4).

I consider the WHBD to be the start, not the end, of the project. I wanted to create a relatively solid backbone to start with. It will be updated in future revisions, as mentioned in the paper, and that’s why I put a relatively large "Version 1.0" on the front page. :). (2/4).
