慈覺〈龜鏡文〉云：「供養眾僧，故有典座。」又云：「為成道業故，應受此食，所以報典座也。」又云：「六味不精，三德不給，非典座所以奉眾也。」又云：「貪婪美膳，毀訾粗餐，非所以報典座也。」

原來佛陀時代就有的職位。。。《僧祇律》云：「佛住舍衛城，有比丘名陀驃摩羅子，眾僧拜典知九事。九事者：典次付床坐、典次差請會、典次分房、典次分衣服、典次分華香、典次分果蓏、典次知暖水人、典次分雜餅食、典知隨意與堪事人，是名僧拜典知九事。付床坐時，是長老右手小指出燈明，隨品次付。」

《禪苑清規》云：「典座之職，主大眾齋粥，須運道心，隨時改變，令大眾受用安樂，亦不得枉費常住齋料。及點檢廚中，不得亂有拋撒。選揀局次行者，能者當之，行令不得太嚴，嚴則擾眾；不宜太緩，緩則失職。。。。

我當典座了。接近六年的修行，終於學會說“yes”，不抗拒被分配的職務。整個禪宗史，就道元禪師寫了《典座教訓》，也是我們日本曹洞宗傳統，每日廚房正式開工前的早課。以前一直懷疑道元禪師用中文寫《典座教訓》，卻從來沒去確認。近來因爲身負供養全寺院和往來客人的肚子，才去確認。果然如是。
