But wait, isn’t his dream just “to be the freest man on the sea?”. This is a common misconception. The manga makes a clear distinction: freedom is the means to an end, not the end itself.

So let’s put it all together. Haki is a manifestation of Spirit. In this process, it serves a dual purpose:.1. The SHIELD that preserves the blade’s body.2. The CONDUIT that channels the swordsman’s soul into the steel.

To wield Enma is to engage in a constant battle of wills. Zoro’s struggle and eventual triumph over Enma during his fight with King represents his final understanding of Kozaburo’s lesson. He learned to impose HIS will upon the blade.

Kozaburo taught that famed swords pisses distinct “temperaments”. A swordsman’s duty is not to fear a blade’s unruliness but to understand its unique nature and ultimately bend it to their will.

The final piece of the puzzle comes from Zoro’s flashback to Kozaburo, the man who forged both Wado Ichimonji and Enma.
