We experimentally tested the heat tolerance of fragments of corals in Kāneʻohe Bay. We revisited the source colonies at the height of a subsequent natural bleaching event and found that our experimental heat test had strong predictive value for bleaching phenotypic outcomes.

Shedd Aquarium has partnered with the @IUCNssc to strengthen freshwater conservation, close the assessment gap for species like freshwater mussels, and make a difference for these critical organisms that support healthy ecosystems.

A new study co-authored by @IUCN reveals that 24% of freshwater species are at high risk of extinction. However, the extinction risk for many species, including molluscs, remains unknown due to insufficient data.

New work from our coral researchers, titled “Heat stress and bleaching in corals: a bioenergetic model", uses a bioenergetic model of coral-algal symbiosis to test mechanisms by which heat stress causes coral bleaching.
