Mecklenburg County: Peebles Corp. request for one-year delay on razing of building because of asbestos is "meritless."

The county's outside attorney, Womble Bond Dickson, said: "In reality, this is merely a continuation of BKV’s ongoing attempts to avoid performing the demolition and removal. Clearly, BKV did not proceed diligently because it has been hoping that it could evade its obligations.

NEW: Mecklenburg Co. sent a blistering letter to the Peebles Corp. about its claim of "Force Majeure" regarding asbestos in the Board of Ed. building, which Peebles must demolish by July 28th. It said the claim is "meritless." full letter below->

Here is the letter The Peebles Corp. sent Mecklenburg County in late April, saying it needs another year to demolish the empty Board of Education uptown. The current deadline is July 28. Peebles says there is asbestos in the building, which shouldn't have been a surprise.

NEW: Brooklyn Village developer The Peebles Corp. must raze the Board of Ed. building by July 28, but wants an extension. Meck Commissioners and county staff don't want to grant it. Could be the end of a 9-year partnership that has yielded nothing built.

new: @CATSRideTransit is pushing out the six restaurants/retail stores at the main bus station uptown, in order to reduce loitering and improve public safety. The transit system says it can now evict people from the station who don't have a bus ticket.
