Alabamaās oldest incarcerated person just died at 106. Itās hard to fathom why someone over a century old needed to live out their final days in custody. At some point, punishment must make room for compassion. These extreme sentences have to give.

When prisons prioritize humane treatment, safety improves for everyoneāboth those incarcerated & the staff who work there. A secure, rehabilitative environment means fewer conflicts, less trauma, & a smoother transition homeāfor returning citizens & officers who arenāt seen as.
As the folks at the @SaferPrisons campaign have been warning, things seem to be coming to a head in prisons around the country. Yesterday, correctional officers in New York began an illegal strike. .
