Of all the tributes written for Mohammed "Abu Khaled" Al-Deif, this one—penned by someone living in Gaza—has stayed with me the most. I find myself returning to it whenever the weight of everything becomes too much:

I’ve got to say, I’ve been feeling pretty disappointed with some Muslims who push the whole “don’t engage with the system, just burn it down” rhetoric. And it’s not because I’m against radical critique or calling out American institutions. Honestly, a lot of that criticism is.
If you think Muslims should sit out because “burn the system down,” then be consistent. Stop paying taxes, stop benefiting from the system, and leave the country. Otherwise, it just comes off as very holier than thou.
