No we're not racist. Here's what: I love Zomato and Phonepe apps, which are built by Indian founders, and I have them on my phone, but I don't want #SancharSaathi . I chose those apps. I should have the option of choosing which apps I want and which I don't. I trust Zomato and
We install foreign (Chinese, U.S.) apps in a flash but explode in outrage when a desi app (Aarogya Setu, digilocker, Sanchar Saathi) tries to protect us. In "RAW DISPATCH FROM MY DESK" I ask is our outrage selective? Do we exalt the foreign over the desi? Are we digital racists?

More bad news for mobile phone users in India (after SIM binding): Our government is mandating a government app (sanchar saathi) on every new phone, permanently, Reuters reports. Will be pushed to your phone via OTA. New smartphones need to have it. Users cannot delete it. This

Please scrap the TIUE regulation @narendramodi . This SIM binding thing is a mess, and goes against what your government said when telecom act was passed. Two things here: 1. When he was telecom minister and the telecom act was passed, @AshwiniVaishnaw had assured that OTTs were
SIM binding for WhatsApp, telegram, and other messaging and social media apps mandated by India's Department of Telecommunications. Can't use your account if the SIM you registered with isn't in the device. https://t.co/RdqZYCBEHh cc @aseemmanchanda

last time i was doing this depth of technical work was to figure out why my mutual fund SIP was failing even though i set up directly with the AMC without involving any upi autopay or nach mandate back in 2023. after long knee-deep research from error logs in the console of
Fun story. I pay my credit card bills using my bank's biller portal. Not using Cred or one of the new age UPI apps, as I later learned EVERYONE uses these days.

This is very interesting. And only someone like @Sengupta can go to such depths to figure out this issue

Nicely caught @jnd We had a similar issue when this was enabled in the payment portal for NRIs making third party payments. Some genius went ahead and enable name match with data coming from other apis. If the other api failed they made rule to pass dummy values. And then made

So- what are some good apps you use to pay card bills now? Like set up, automate and forget about it for the rest of time?

Like- if you wanted compliance, penalise the bank that's not sending those details? Or the billing platform? See how quickly you'd achieve compliance. But no, our default is going to be to make the customer suffer on their highest stakes actions.

So instead of blocking outgoing transactions or freezing the card or asking for KYC or just talking to the customer, someone decided the best course of action would be to block incoming transactions (repayments) and let people default on their card payments.

But this seems to be recurring across multiple banks. So maybe some problem with the billing tech provider? I don't know. But I send an email to their founders. No response of course.

So now why did my name mismatch though? My name's the same to my card company and to my bank. Turns out my bank isn't even sending my name. Of course, I have no clue why.

Now, a few months ago, some genius decided that we will require name matching for card repayments over 50k. I'm sure there were good reasons. But the fun part was what happens if there's a name mismatch. They return your money. So you default on your card payment.

Finally, 2 months after raising tickets with everybody, one helpful response. Then a call with a very nice person at India's biggest billing player who runs the actual billing platform for most banks (IYKYK) reveals what's going on.

I raise some support tickets and make some calls. Bank says sir there is no problem- you have balance, not an issue at our end. Card company says sir there is no problem, your account does not have any block / credit freeze / etc.

I pray this is a temporary problem. But no. Happens next month. Now I'm a bit less stressed because I've seen this last month. But still an annoyance. I try this from another bank's biller portal. Fails again. And yet another bank. Fails yet again. Have run of banks to try with.

A few days later, the money is returned. And a few days after that, my complaints are answered (thanks for the timely response, bankcos), but all they say is that we've returned your money. No explanation about failure.

So I reattempt. Fails again. Now I'm out a few lakhs and the money is nowhere to be found. I panic. Pull together some more funds and NEFT into the card account. This approach works. Still stressed about where my money is for the failed payments. I raise some complaints.

Odd. Balance is there in the account. Other card bills are getting paid fine. Other cards from the same issuer are also getting paid fine. Maybe some temporary glitch. I'm 4 days from my card deadline.

A while ago, all card bill payments moved to @NPCI_NPCI's @BharatConnect_ . Everything worked smoothly, well most of the time. Out of the blue, my biggest card bills start failing.
