The past three state budgets have increased education spending by more than a billion dollars each year, but the system is serving fewer and fewer students. That’s part of the problem we face in determining the proper level of investment in K-12 schools.

These are the stakes in this budget debate. If we passed the House’s $50.25B budget, we would deplete all emergency reserves next year just to pay our bills. Then we’re left with a massive hole to fill the following year. That means massive program cuts, or massive tax hikes.

More than 10 million people face domestic abuse every year in the U.S. This month is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month to bring more attention to the resources available to support survivors.

Here’s a dose of reality. The state expects to bring in $45.1 billion in net revenue. Governor Shapiro wants to spend $51.5B. House Democrats want to spend $50.25B. Their spending demands would deplete all reserves and lead to tax increases.

For the second time this year, the Senate passed a budget to ensure counties, school districts and others receive needed funding. It’s past time for Governor Shapiro and the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives to end the impasse they created.
