further, we highlight the precuneus as a brain region that is differentially sensitive to the amount (!!) of money vs. time donated

in short, we found that there are many neural activations shared between donating time and money, but donating TIME neurobiologically is more rewarding and engages greater perspective-taking than donating money!

both donating time (e.g., volunteering / community service) and money to charities seek to benefit our community, but these behaviors are drastically different in their nature of exchange (social vs. financial exchange)

#JNeurosci: @SehJooKwon @EvaTelzer et al. @UNCPsych found that donating time activated brain regions involved in reward valuation & social cognition more strongly than donating money, suggesting that neurobiologically, donating time may be more rewarding. https://t.co/KivO2Nm8T9

I applied for the @NSF GRFP 3x (1x postbacc, 2x grad) and got funded on my 3rd try, giving me invaluable time/resources to do research. NSF now limits the # of GRFP attempts (1x grad), likely exacerbating the consistently lower rates at which Asian + other URM scholars are funded

Out now in @BiologicalPsyc1, we find that neural sensitivity to social punishment, in combination with a 'real world' index of peer rejection, predicts future NSSI. Thanks to coauthors @SehJooKwon Nathan Jorgensen @ka_lindquist @EvaTelzer @mitchprinstein!

3. We also discuss what the developing self + other-related processes during adolescence mean for longitudinal social influence research!

2. We explore the social targets of adolescents’ risk taking — teens think about + are very sensitive to who their risky behaviors are impacting.

A new review by me and @EvaTelzer!✨1. In this review, we discuss the many ways through which social information infiltrates adolescents’ risky decision-making, and the role of the developing brain. 🧵

A Review in @NatRevPsych discusses how adolescents take risks that affect themselves by using social contextual information and how adolescents take risks that affect others, whereby the target of their risks serves as the social contextual information. https://t.co/sCww2hm4Ta

✨Trainee Spotlight✨ Meet Seh-Joo Kwon (@SehJooKwon), a 4th year PhD student working with Dr. Eva Telzer (@EvaTelzer, @DSNLab) at UNC Chapel Hill. Her work focuses on how adolescents make decisions in a social context, and how the developing brain supports these behaviors.
